A Reflection Paper on: ROMERO Movie

The Movie Romero based on true story written by John Sacret Young is directed by
John Dulgan presents the life of Archbishop Oscar Romero, a bishop of Salvadoran who peacefully
fought for human justice in the corner of being a religious leader. In this movie, Raul Julia acts as the
archbishop and John Duigan animated it.

After watching this movie, I have seen clearly how important to lead people peacefully in the
church. When leading people, Worship is one of the important things that should not be forgotten.
According to this movie, we can see how important of worship. Here, Worship can soft people are
worth, worship can reduce people’s pressures from any difficulties, worship can give people brave.
Worship can give people strengths to fight for justice peacefully. Worship motivates people to be
faithful Christian who love his neighbors. Worship can give the hope for hopeless. Worship can give
people to think back their lives not to be problem makers and tools for problem makers but to change
their lives and stand for needed people.

When heart of Human Being which God wanted were lost in the authority holders of El
Salvador, people were met with hardness, were raped, treated, murdered. Rights of being human also
were controlled. Archbishop was nearly used by the authority holders, but he fought for human justice
without being used as tool of injustice. When the church was closed and Christian was not allowed to
worship in the church, Archbishop who knew worship is the only one which can give peace of heart
and strengths to people leaded people into the church and celebrated the Holy Communion.

He used his authorities of being an archbishop in his time. He preached for human justice at
the worship events and went to the prisons and made free the prisoners of political. He said “I want to
be safe like any other Salvadoran” when he was warned to stop from fighting. When he had no idea to
deal with the situations, he worshiped and kneeled down to God and asked God’s helps with
seriously, “Lord I can’t, you must. Show me the way”. As soon as he worshiped to God, he continued
to fight for justice.

Here, we can see his believing in GOD, when he made the mass service with villagers who
were facing with troubles, in his conversation with people, he said, Lord, you created us for
freedom. Christ, you made us to live in dignity, Lord; you strengthen us in our struggle for
justice.

In his last sermon, he said to soldiers that, “the farmers and persons that you killed are your
owned brother and sisters. When you hear the words of the men, telling you to kill, think instead in
the word of God. Thou shall not kill. No soldier is a blind to obey to the lord of God. In his name,
and in the name of our Lord, I implore you, I beg you, I order you, stop the oppressions!”

Archbishop Romero was murdered on March 24, 1980. He had spoken the disturbing truth.
Many chose not to listen. As a result, between 1980 and 1989, more than 60000 Salvadorans were
killed. But the struggle for peace and freedom, justice and dignity goes on.

Worship is not only the way we give honor to God but also the way we serve the
Lord. We can worship by serving him. So, we have to find how we should serve him. Serving
him is living by his will. If we read throughout the whole Bible, we will know God is not
sleeping God who ignores all the injustices. In the Bible both Old Testament and New
Testament, we can see people who fought for the justice and stand side by side with needed
people. Moses was fighting for the freedom of Israel. Elijah told against King Ahab for his
wickedness. Prophet Nathan showed out the mistake of King David for his two mistakes,
murder and adultery. Jesus comes for marginalized people. James said that, “Faith no action
is dead”. We have to show our faith by our actions. The world we are living today is full of
conflicts. Terrible things have grown day by day. When other people are fighting for justice,
when other people are standing for freedom of living, Should Christians who worship the
God who hate injustice ignore the bad situations which happened among us? So, We, God’s
children should not disregard the injustices happened around us but to fight for justice with
the power of God. Doing like that is one way of our serving to God.

But, God wants our standing for justice without terrorisms. Especially, servants of the
Lord must not only to worship God and pray for poor or marginalized alone, but also he or
she must serve the Lord (another way of worship) by standing for justice and lead his people
in the name of justice. He or she must not be as the burner of problems but the deliverer of
peace in his or her church or society.

Worship can empower our life to do good things for our society. The more we
worship to God, the more we want to serve the Lord. The more we knew God is the
righteous, the more we want to live for justice.

So, I have known that, worship is one of the most important things which can create a
peaceful society.
