Meeting 12

Let Us Negotiate!
A. Understanding
It is a strategic discussion that
resolves an issue in a way that both
parties find acceptable. Here, in a
negotiation, each party tries to
persuade the other to agree with
his/her point of view.
The simple dialogue
Ms. April : “Have a seat, Mr. Phil.”
Mr. Phil : “Yes, Ms.”
Ms. April : “Let me read your performance list,
please wait for a moment.”
Mr. Phil : “Alright, Sir.”
Ms. April : “Overall, You did the job well.”
Mr. Phil : “Thank you, Ms. …”
Ms. April : “So, for the next, IT Staff will be your
position.”
Mr. Phil : “Ok, Ms. Phil. Am I right to be the
member of IT?”
Ms. April : “Yes, absolutely you are.”
Negotiation is a situation where:
➢Two or more different parties meet, discuss, and
reach a decision that benefits them.
➢ Parties bargain and trade through take and give.
They confer and exchange views to reach a
compromising agreement.
➢ The final agreement satisfies various parties
➢ Parties attempt to reach win-win situation. Win-win is
how you want to end up with both parties happy and
ready to do business with each other again.
So, when reaching
the end of a negotiation in
English, one of the key
steps is to confirm the
terms and conditions of
the agreement so both
sides are absolutely clear
and fully understand their
obligations.
The example of confirming negotiation.
Christ: So, Mr. Steve, am I right by saying that for you, this
is an opportunity to expand your business?
Steve : “Yes, that’s right.”
Christ : “For sure! I am glad to see that.”
Steve : “Truly, it seems through your passion.”
Christ : “You can say that again, sir!
So, when can we start?”
Christ : “Wait for the next information.”
Steve : “I will be waiting for your following information,
Sir.”
