A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY
by Deborah E. Arden

My journey from educator to

valuation and appraisement specialist
has been a winding road, with many forks,
dead ends and glorious views.

To traverse this road you need curiosity, a sense of discovery enlightened by research.
This road has taken me to some of the most revered archives of history; the V & A
Library; the Rijksbureau in The Hague; the Rubenianum in Antwerp; Witt Library of
the University of London; countless museums; and many university and municipal
libraries in search of both knowledge and connoisseurship in Fine and Decorative Art.

After nearly 40 years of examining, documenting, researching, evaluating, and valuing

Fine and Decorative Art, the lesson is that every item evaluated and valued becomes a
step on the road to discovery along the way, contributing valuable knowledge that
enhances the journey.

What is needed to start on the road of such a passage of discovery is an eager open-
minded student, with an active curious nature, combined with vetted sources of
information. There are wonderful destinations along the journey for anyone with the
patience to undertake it. The road is rife with wonderful places, deeply problematic
swamps, and soaring heights. It is a journey I love and will continue on as long as I am
able.

My journey began first with knowledge gained in the world of art dealing. A dusty,
sometimes muddy road. It was soon clear that Specialty Knowledge did not answer
questions of value beyond a very limited scope of buying and selling. When called
Deborah Arden with her Cairn Terriers in 1985.

Enter a Lamp of Knowledge on my journey, Elly Rosen, AiSCV AVS-GJV, FGA, GG to illuminate my path. In 1982, Elly headed up the
development of personal property's first professional appraisal education program for ISA in conjunction with the Division of Professional
Development of Indiana University's School of Continuing Education. That advanced program replaced rudimentary dealer knowledge of
“appraising” with the fundamentals of professional personal property valuation principles. That early appraisal education I acquired in 1985 has now
given way to the "master" program, AIS' Global Valuation Standard™ (GVS) I completed in 2014 under Elly Rosen's excellent tutelage as founder,
president and instructor of the AISociety™ - Appraisers International Society (AIS).

Once an Educator, always an Educator, I feel an obligation to share knowledge gained with clients and colleagues. Now, as my path continues, it is
my turn to give back with a course that illuminates the way for others interested in the Fine and Décorative Art specialty. As an AiSpecialty program,
AiS-FA™ Appraising Fine & Decorative Arts (AiS-FA™) applies AiCore Principles, Ethics and Standards, to Appraisal Methodology and
Reporting unique to needs of Fine & Decorative Arts. Newly packaged and presented in an expanded fifty five hour course and exam required for
