PUH 511: Disease Screening and Diagnostic Procedures (1, 0, 1) 2 credits

Concept of disease diagnosis and screening; Importance, use and organization of a Public Health
Laboratory; Instrumentation; Sample collection and preservation; Staining techniques;
Diagnostic and screening tests covered include Microbiological, Parasitological,
Haematological, Clinical Chemistry, Immunological and Serological and Histopathological
analysis of endemic communicable and non-communicable diseases; Measurement of vital signs
including temperature, blood pressure and pulse; anthropometry including height, weight, head
circumference, arm circumference, charting growth and development, body-mass index/
ponderal index; audiometry etc. others are: screening /diagnostic techniques such as sensitivity,
specificity, Positive Predictive value (PPV) and Negative Predictive value (NPV).
