Class 7 Ch 2 NUTRITION IN ANIMALS (Part -4) Date: 8/9/21

Biology
19.Name the type of carbohydrate that can be digested by ruminants but
not by humans. Give the reason also.
Ans: Cellulose is the carbohydrate that can be digested by ruminants but not
by humans. This is because ruminants have large sac like structures called
caecum between the small intestine and the large intestine. Cellulose is
digested here by the action of certain bacteria which are not present in
humans.

20.Write one similarity and difference between the nutrition in amoeba

and human beings.
Similarity :
Both amoeba and human beings show all the steps of nutrition that is
ingestion, digestion, absorption, assimilation and egestion.
Difference :

• In amoeba all the steps of nutrition is carried out by a single cell as

amoeba is a unicellular organism.
• In humans, the steps of nutrition is carried out in different organs of
the alimentary canal as humans have well organized structures i.e,
they are multicellular.

21. What is rumination?

Ans: The partially digested food in the rumen is called cud. Further chewing
of cud is called rumination.
22. Describe with a well labelled diagram digestion in amoeba.

a. Amoeba pushes out one, or more finger-like projections, called

pseudopodia or false feet for movement and capture of food.

b. When it senses food, it pushes out pseudopodia around the food

particle and engulfs it.

c. The food becomes trapped in a food vacuole

d. Digestive juices in the food vacuole act on the food and break it
down into simpler substances.

e. The digested food is absorbed and the absorbed substances are

used for growth, maintenance and multiplication. The undigested
residue of the food is expelled outside by the vacuole.
