Based on what was discussed earlier in our first meeting, Ma’am Cindy Ylagan highlighted the

two major philosophers that contributed to the foundation of critical thinking skills which plays a vital
role in our lives today. It was further discussed that Socrates was a Greek Philosopher know for his
method of inquiry also known as the “Socratic Method”, it is a two-way process of questioning an
individual about different concepts that we are ignorant about to determine the underlying beliefs
that guides the person toward better understanding. With this convoluted idea of Socratic Method,
many leaders were offended for his curiosity towards many things that led these leaders to think that
he was questioning the way they manage and lead their people. In result, he was jailed and accused
for impiety for corrupting the minds of the youth with his ideas and principles. Instead of running
away, Socrates accepted his faith and resorted to being sentenced to death by consuming a poison.
Some of his renowned ideas was his belief that our soul is immortal, which means that as we are
about to end our life, our body dies but the soul within is indestructible and argued that death is not
the end of existence, rather the separating of the body and the soul that’s why it lead him to think
about the second notion which is taking care of the soul is the task of philosophy. Another notion that
he highlighted was that virtue is necessary to achieve happiness. Moreover, he is the proponent for
the idea that we have 2 kinds of existence, which are the visible and invisible.

The next philosopher that was tackled was Plato who was known for being a student of Socrates,
as a disciple, some of his ideas are evident and correlated to the concepts of Socrates. He was the
person known to have written the Socratic Dialogue and was best known for his theory of forms that
argues that the world we are currently living is a mere imitation of the real world, that entails we only
rely on our senses to comprehend the things that is happening in our environment. He also firmly
believed that our soul is the most divine aspect of the human being that clearly defines that we
should be conscious of our own selves in the things that we do to other people. Moreover, Plato
believed that there are three parts of the soul namely: rational, appetitive, and the spirited. The three
parts consist of different functions that molds as a human person. Lastly, he was the proponent to
have discussed about the three kinds of being that involves different dominant characteristics that are
innate within a person.
