Questions and Solutions of International Astronomy

Olympiad 2019 (IAO2019) that was held in Piatra Neamt,

Romania, from 19 to 27 October 2019

XXIV International Astronomy Olympiad

A team of 3 team leaders and 5 Malaysian students

participated in this event. It was the first time that Malaysia
sent a full team to this event. The Malaysian team won a
bronze medal in this prestigious international competition.

The IAO is open to students from 14 to 18 years old.

Alpha Group: 14 to 15 years old

Beta Group: 16 to 18 years old
There are three rounds in IAO2019.

Theoretical Round (4 hours)

Observational Round (25 minutes)
Practical Round (4 hours)

THEORETICAL ROUND

THEORETICAL ROUND.

Each question carries 8 marks.

Total marks for the THEORETICAL ROUND is 40 marks.
Below are questions of the Observational Round. This round
was held at night on 22 October 2019 in the freezing cold in
Stadium Ceahlaul (football stadium of Piatra Neamt,
Romania).

OBSERVATIONAL ROUND

ANSWER ALL SIX QUESTIONS

(25 MINUTES)
For the Observational Round, each student was provided
with an OMEGON Newtonian Advanced Telescope (8-inch
aperture, F/5) on an EQ500 Mount with manual control
(no GOTO).

Total marks for the Observational Round is 20 marks.

held on 24 October 2019 in Petru Rares National College in
Piatra Neamt, Romania.
