VOTING IN THE PHILIPPINES

1. As a Filipino citizen, why is voting important?

Voting is one important way that we can participate in our democracy. In

order to vote for President in a federal election, a citizen must be18 or older.
Besides voting for officials, we also vote on issues. Voters may want to make
changes to their community, such as building bigger schools or adding new
roads. We can contact our government officials when we want to support or
change a law. Voting in an election and contacting our elected officials are two
ways that Filipinos can participate in our democracy.

2. In our country, how does one gain the right to vote?

To gain the right to vote, in electoral systems, voter registration is the

requirement that a person otherwise eligible to vote must register on an electoral
roll, which is usually a prerequisite for being entitled or permitted to vote.

3. Do all Filipino citizens have the right to vote?

All citizens of the Philippines, eighteen years of age or over, and residents
of the Philippines for one year and for at least six months in the city or
municipality wherein he/she proposes to vote immediately preceding the election
are qualified to vote.
4.    Who are denied the right to vote?

Those who are under eighteen years of age are not yet allowed to vote
and any person who has been sentenced by final judgment to suffer
imprisonment for not less than one year. However, he/ she may reacquire the
right to vote upon expiration of five years after service of sentence.
