1. INTRODUCTION
„You
Have cried a lot
Separated in spirit
United in heart
We Have been together for so long
Your breath's cold
The heart in flames“
This quote from the song "Deutschland" one of the most famous bands in the
world, the band Rammstein, is very complex and shows how Rammstein fans and
members think about Germany. The unity of Germany is very important for them and
will always be because even if the population is separated in the mind it will remain
one in the heart. The first line reflects all german history in which a lot was cried. So
you can say that Rammstein dips deep into the topics that you write and sing. This
group is very interesting as they writes texts with deep meaning they were successful
around the world.
So I decided for Rammstein because they pick up exciting topics in their songs
and often use metaphors in their texts which makes them interesting and therefore
encourage the texts to think. The texts are difficult to understand and many people get
them wrong, because the band often says something but the people understand the
opposite due to the pictorial and ironic language, or do not capture the right meaning
but that's exactly what makes the controversy around the band and her music so
revealed.
Therefore, I will first introduce the band members before a short demolition is
given about the formation and history of the band. Then their music should be
illuminated in more detail before finally turning out one of their existing pieces with
regard to the relevant aspects for the characteristics of the band.

3
2. THE BAND RAMMSTEIN
Rammstein is considered one of the most famous and successful german bands
of the 20th and 21st centuries. With their music, which is counted to "neuen
deutschen Härte" (New German hardness), however, not only in Germany reached
the status of a cult band, but also obtained international celebrity. Therefore, the
members are to be presented first below before a short demolition is given about the
formation and history of this exception.

2.1. THE MEMBERS

The band Rammstein consists of six members: Till Lindemann, Richard Zven
"Scholle" Kruspe-Bernstein, Paul H. Landers, Oliver "Ollie" Riedel, Christian
"Flake"Lorenz and Christoph "Doom" Schneider.
The frontman of Rammstein, Till Lindemann, was born on January 4, 1963 in
Leipzig and is a german musician and poet. It is known as a singer and text pointer of
the band Rammstein but also writes ge-density regardless. His musical career began
Lindemann still to DDR times as a drummer of Punkband First Arsch. After moving
to Berlin, Lindemann founded the band Rammstein together with five other
musicians in 1994.
Another member of the band is Richard Zven Kruspe, who was born on June
24, 1967 in Wittenberg, and is also a german musician. He is the first guitarist of the
band Rammstein. His musical career began when he visited Czechoslovakia in the
Al-Ter of 16 with some friends, where he bought his first guitar on which he played
from there. Already in the early 1990s he gets to know some Rammstein members,
with which he founded Rammstein.
In addition, Paul H. Landers, born as Heiko Paul Hirsche on December 9, 1964
in Berlin, is the guitarist at Rammstein. He already played with Christian "Flake"

4
Lorenz at Feeling B and with Christoph "Doom" Schneider with the company before.
He finally became part of the band Rammstein.
Furthermore, Oliver Riedel was born on April 11, 1971 in Schwerin and
fungiers as a bassist of rock group Rammstein. Before he founded the band
Rammstein in 1994 with Till Lindemann, Richard Z. Kruspe and Christoph
Schneider, he played in the band The Inchobokatables. Furthermore, Oliver is the
young one of the band and is considered a quiet and shy man.
The fifth member of Rammstein, Christian Flake Lorenz, was born on 16
November 1966 in Berlin and is the keyboarder of the band. Before that, he first
played in various Rhythm & Blues bands, later at Feeling B, where he reached by
Paul H. Landers. At first Lorenz did not held much from the project Rammstein, as he
wanted to become a doctor which did not succeed him and ultimately decided to join
the band as a keyboarder.
Finally, with Christoph Schneider, which was born on 11 May 1966 in Berlin,
the last member of Rammstein. He became known as a beat-maker of the band. His
nickname is "Doom" - according to the computer game series of the same name - but
often he is just called "Schneider". His musical career started early, because in school
he already played trumpet. At the age of 14 he got a drum from his brother Stephan.
After that he played in a variety of small independent bands, including the company,
where he also met the Rammstein guitarist Paul Landers before he also contraded the
band Rammstein.

5
2.2. HISTORICAL DEMOLITION OF THE BAND
In 1993 the idea for the founding of Rammstein, significantly pre-beginning
driven by Frontmann Till Lindeman was born which was also implemented in 1994.
The name of the band is a reference to the flying catastrophe which demanded 70
deaths in Rheinland-Pfalz in 1988 at the US Air Force Base in Ramstein in
Rheinland-Pfalz. The naming election alone already highlights the provocative
attitude of the band, which will later also be understood based on their video clips,
stage shows as well as outfits.
After a first demo band has been included in the occupation already listed,
Rammstein could thus win a week of studio stay in Berlin which started the ribbon of
the band. Subsequently, the grouping was able to record their first success in 1995 as
they received the subsequent debut album "Herzeleid" (Heartache). With this song
the group was first identified in Germany and then worldwide. Although this album
did not sell as good as his successor, but laid the foundation for the following great
success. Furthermore, Rammstein succeeded in 1997 and published second album
"Sehnsucht" (Longing) of commercial and media breakthrough. In contrast to the
debut this revealed widely effectively, so that "Sehnsucht" could take the top position
of the German and Österreir-Chian charts. The band finally dared the step over the
big pond to America and unlikely happened: supported by pyrotechnics and the
pleasant showers of the "Ugly Germans", achieved "Sehnsucht" in the US charts not
only almost the upper top 50 but it was also awarded a golden record, which has had
no German-speaking act anymore since the days of Falcoos Rock Me Amadeus.
It is also worth noteworthy that Rammstein's breakthrough also depicts a new
form of hard German-language music, which was famous in the following years as
"Neue Deutsche Härte" (New German hardness) and that all attention was also
discussed the supposedly right-mindedness of the group. Certainly not to defuse the
cover of Depeche Mode Hits stripped, which Rammstein published in 1998 and

6
whose videoclip had been underlaid with NS-Hofregeurin Leni Riefenstahl's film
over the Olympics 1936 in Berlin. Speaked in various interviews the tape spaced
from any right-wing extremist thoughts and described itself as unpolitically. After
that the success series of Rammstein continued: in 2001, the third studio album and a
number one hit of the band appeared with "Mutter" (Mother) , which brought with
"Sonne" (Sun) again a provocative videoclip. With regard to the still-smiring right-
handed-oriented debate, however, Rammstein provided a clear statement against any
form of right-wing radicalism with the song "Links-2-3-4" (Left-2-3-4) which by an
open letter Till Lindemanns in the magazine "Stern" to the same thema was
supplemented in which they were clearly positioned against right-wing extremism.
Since then the hitherto passionately guided debate is whether Rammstein are now or
not, generally considered. The once-controversial band of Germany had now
established itself and could afford the luxury to produce a first video retrospective
with the DVD "Lichtspielhaus" published in 2003 as well as with "Reise, Reise"
(Arise, arise) (2004) and "Rosenrot" (Rose-red) (2005) two platels to be published in
a short time distance but remained still provocatively. In 2006, the second live album
of the band came out with "Völkerball" (Nations'-ball) which underlined the state of
Rammstein as an internationally successful german-speaking band. In 2007
Rammstein held a one-year creative break, which was completed in 2008 with the
recordings for the sixth studio album named "Liebe ist für alle da" (There is love for
everyone) and can still build seamlessly to their success.

3. THE MUSIC
Rammstein's music style is often referred to as "Neue Deutsche Härte"(New
German hardness), a music style whose texts are predominantly in german and
whose musical influences are varied while DE standard cast (deeper) vocals, electric
guitar, e-bass, drums and keyboard form. However their music spans a sheet of
related styles such as hard rock and metal to industrial rock. An accurate

7
classification is therefore due to the great differences between individual titles - for
example between the ballad "Ohne dich" (Without you) destroy the brachial and the
elements of the latin american music "Te Quiero Puta" (I love you, whore!) with
Spanish text - almost impossible. Characteristic of Rammstein are also hard guitar
riffs and a simple, driving rhythm. A special characteristic of their music is also Till
Lindemann's deeper, "Teuton's" vocals with role-the "R" which is justified by
Lindemann's deep vocal position. The texts of Rammstein and, above all, their lecture
by singer Till Lindemann are an essential element of music and impress the
perception by fans as well as a broader public. This is, among other things, that often
very controversy, tabuised and pubic topics such as Sadomaso-Chism (Bück dich)
(Bend down), incest (Spiel mit mir und Tier) (Play with me and Animal), sexual abuse
by spiritual (Halleluja), necrophilia (Heirate mich) (Marry me) and the game
Religious pictures (Asche zu Asche) (Ashes to ashes) or an exceptional view of them
are chosen. In particular, the songs on the early albums Herzeleid (Heartache) and
Sehnsucht (Longing) thematize sex and violence. Although this was similar on the
album Mutter (Mother), there are his texts poetic and profound. Less violent, but
nevertheless powerful, are finally treated for Reise, Reise (Arise, arise) and Rosenrot
(Rose-red) more and more intensity between relationships. Rammstein sing there
about friendship, loneliness, obsession, unfortunate love and superficiality in benefits.
In addition, Rammstein put a significant amount of pyrotechnic in its concerts.
Thus, individual band members carry flame widths on their heads or turn while
playing smoke and sparks. At the song Rammstein, singer Lindemann - protected by
an asbestoscoat - at all. Also unusual props such as microphones in knife shape (to
Mein Teil) (My part), exploding drums and sticks or facial masks are used for
individual pieces. The pyrotechnic deposits, especially from the trained fireworks
engineer Lindemann, are in a not insignificant dimensions for the high degree of
awareness of the band.
How exactly these factors interact, in the next section, on the basis of one of
their new songs, namely "Deutschland" (Germany), are shown.

8
3.1. THE SONG "DEUTSCHLAND"
Deutschland is a song of the "Neue-Deutsche-Härte" band Rammstein, which
was the first pre-single out of her seventh studio album Rammstein published on 17
May 2019.
The text sung by Till Lindemann already points to the diverse intra-german
conflicts at the beginning:
"You
Have cried a lot
Separated in spirit
United in heart"
It becomes clear that within Germany conflicts on different levels are found
which split the country but ultimately the people living there in the heart are a nation.
Overall, due to the topicality, this can certainly refer to the smoldering right-wing
radicalism within the country which is directed against migrants and refugees which
has increasingly increased in recent years.
This topic opens to Lindemann in the chorus:
"Germany – my heart in flames
Want to love and damn you
Germany – your breath is cold
So young, and yet so old "
Again, it shows that the singer also loves at the same time and hates the
cleavage within detect Germany.
Later, Lindemann holds here and especially in the question of father-land love
itself:
"Germany – your love
Is a curse and a blessing
Germany – my love

9
I can't give you"
Thus, Lindemann clearly states that he can not love Germany in his form even
though his land opposes him this love the reasons he has for this but it is likely to
suspect the prevailing stanzas that his aversion is justified in the cleavage as well as
tearing in Germany, consequently in dealing with the rights of legalism which is on
the rise and is credged in an ironic manner.
In addition, the band uses in terms of the country in the historical context of the
style of alliteration. In addition, it uses an allusion to the controversial, first stanza of
the former German national anthem by sings Lindemann in the transition to the
refrain:
"Presumptuous, superior
Take over, hand over/puke
Surprise, invade
Germany, Germany above everything",
what first suggests a right-wing radical background, but later it goes with the words:
"Superior/overpowering, unnecessary. Übermenschen weary.
The higher you climb, the further you fall.
Germany, Germany above everything."
It becomes clear that he is exactly this supercouragement of the Germans as
well as these Germans who see the right-radical ideas as well as superimposed, and
the right-wing idea self-criticized, as this represents the reason for the cleavage and
the case to be assured.

3.2. THE MUSIC VIDEO FOR "DEUTSCLAND"

The associated music video on the song "Deutschland" was published on
March 28, 2019 at YouTube. Already two days earlier the band had published a 35
second teaser in which the band members were shown as a concentration camp
inmates with gallows knit around the neck. The video shows scenes from over 2000
years of German history; from the Germanicus campaigns to Germania Magna in 16

10
AD, about Knights, the witch tracking, November Revolution at the end of the First
World War, hyperinflation in the on-catching years of the Weimar Republic, the
Golden Twenties, the Book Convention 1933, the "Hindenburg" catastrophe, the
Second World War, the Holocaust, the history of the German Democratic Republic,
the Red Army Group, to the Maikrawallen. Ultimately, all time periods end by
violence which moves like a red thread through the centuries. The co-limbs of the
band occupy under different roles in the different times. The black germania
accompanied by wolves cuts the head at the beginning, when the Roman Legion
arrives, the obviously dead singer of the band, Till Lindemann which represents a
Roman with his head. With this entry-level scene is played on the collection of the
population against the Roman beet recorders. Later, Germania appears again in
different costumes in all periods of time, often surrounded by German Shepherds.
How-dollt is shown how she wears the head of the dead. Often she seems to
accompany the events only passive but occasionally she also actively engages, for
example by the handling of stringing ring on two men at the time of the Weimar
Republic, if she knights to life after a battle or riding a army on a horse. Occasionally,
she is also victims of events; So she is as a food with sauerkraut before her eating
monks, is burned by knights on a stake, when the SS shot from the concentration
camp inmates or is anxious hostage of the RAF terrorists. After kissing the head of
the dead Roman she becomes pregnant and later from a maternity helper of several
Leonbergers. Finally, the supposedly dead, maybe even only end Germania in a
future scenario in a recalled on Snow White-reminiscent-the Glassarg into space.
During the credits, a piano version of the Rammstein Piece Sonne (Sun), which is
rehearsed by Clemens Pötzsch, is running in whose music video Snow White played
an equally amplifier role, in the end also appeared in a coffin and again revealed alive
again. The music video thus also supports the critical attitude of the band compared
to current developments in Germany and clearly indicates that the feeling of
overpowering and exaggerated national priority up to right-wing radicalism has
always led to violent, serious conflicts and wars which is why this song of the band is

11
very much interesting as well as up-to-conclusive and explains your success.

5. CONCLUSION
I started this work to first introduce the band members and then introduce the
beginnings of the band history gradually to their current work and their current
music. After that I described their music and more closely linked to the concrete
example "Deutschland" (Germany).
This could be clarified why Rammstein is such a famous band in which one is
forced to listen to the texts of their songs closely to understand what it really goes and
how they are meant. If you hear their music you immediately know that they have
something to say and have their songs a deep meaning. Finally, Rammstein is
therefore one of my favorite bands, because they are catchy and smart in their music
as well as their texts and passing on their own thoughts to the world as well as
positively influence.
