What I Have Learned

A relation is any set of ordered pairs where the first element of the ordered pairs is called the domain
while the second elements is called the range.

A function is a rule of correspondence between two elements such that each element in the domain
corresponds to exactly one element in the range.

In a function machine, the input represents the independent variable while the output is the dependent
variable.

B.

Using functions and operations on them, such as derivatives and integrals you can predict
how the objects will move and behave. Almost everything most people think of as math
involves a function. In fact, if math is used for any real life purpose you can be sure at least
one function is used.

Addition is a function that maps two real numbers to one real number.

A metric is a function that maps two points in a space to a non-negative real number and
represents the distance between the two points.

C.
A piecewise function is a function in which more than one formula is used to define the output.
We use piecewise functions to describe situations in which a rule or relationship changes
as the input value crosses certain “boundaries.” For example, we often encounter situations
in business for which the cost per piece of a certain item is discounted once the number ordered
exceeds a certain value.

What I have Learned

1. A polynomial function is a function that involves only non-negative integer

powers or only positive integer exponents of a variable in an equation like the
quadratic equation, cubic equation, etc. For example, 2x+5 is a polynomial that has
exponent equal to 1.
2. An exponential function is defined by the formula f(x) = ax, where the input variable x
occurs as an exponent. The exponential curve depends on the exponential function and it
depends on the value of the x. The exponential function is an important mathematical
function which is of the form. f(x) = ax.’
3. A rational function is one that can be written as a polynomial divided by a polynomial.
Since polynomials are defined everywhere, the domain of a rational function is the set of all
numbers except the zeros of the denominator.
4. An absolute value function is a function that contains an algebraic expression within
absolute value symbols. Recall that the absolute value of a number is its distance from 0
on the number line.

5. The greatest integer function is a function from the set of real numbers to itself that is defined
as follows: it sends any real number to the largest integer that is less than or equal to it. The
greatest integer function of   is sometimes denoted

Addition Subtraction
To add two functions, replace f(x) To subtract two functions, replace f(x) and
and g(x) by the given values and g(x) by the given values and then distirbute
combine like terms. the negative sign and combine like terms.
For Example: (f - g) (x) = f (x) - g(x)
(f + g) (x) = f (x) + g(x) = (x+5) - (3x+1)
= (x+7) + (3x+1) Apply rule: (a) = a
Group like terms = x+5 – 3x+1
= x +3x + 7 +1 Apply distributive law -(a+b)= -a -b
Add the numbers: 7+1 =8 = x+5-3x-1
= x + 3x +8 Group like terms
Add similar elements: x+3x=4x = x-3x+5-1
= 4x+8 Subtract the numbers: 5-1=4
= x-3x+4
Add similar elements: x-3= -2x
= - 2x+4

Multiplication Division
To multiply two functions, replace To divide two functions, replace h(x) and g(x) by the given values
f(x) and g(x) by the given values then factor the numerator and cancel out common factors.
then multiply the binomials. Example:
Example:
(f + g) (x) = f (x) + g(x)
= (x+2) + (5x+2)
Apply FOIL method: (a+b)
(c+d)= ac+ ad+ dc+bd
= x * 5x + x * 2+2 * 5x+ 2*2
Simplify:
=5x^2+12x+4
