PREFACE
The Learning Activity Sheet of the Curriculum Implementation Division particularly the Learning
Resources Management and Development Unit, Department of Education, Schools Division of
Mountain Province which is in response to the implementation of the K to 12 Curriculum.
The Learning Material is a property of the Department of Education- CID, Schools Division of
Mountain Province. It aims to improve students’ performance specifically in TLE.

II. Background Information for Learners

In this Learning Activity Sheet, you will understand Microsoft Word and explore
its basic elements.

Background of MS Word

Microsoft Word or MS Word – is often called “Word” is a graphical


word processing program that users can type with. Its purpose is to
allow users to type and save documents.

History: Microsoft Word is created by Charles Sinomyi a developer


and Richard Brodie a software engineer. This program was initially
named “Multi-Tool Word” but later was renamed as MS Word. It was
introduced in 1983. Word for windows is available standalone or as
a part of MS Office Suite. The extension for any word file is “.doc”

Uses of MS Word:

1. In Education: it is considered as one of the simplest tools which can be used by


both teachers and students. Creating notes is easier using MS Word as they can
be made more interactive by adding shapes and images. It is also convenient to
make assignments of MS Word and submitting them online.

2. In Workplace: Submitting letters, bills, creating reports, letterheads, sample


documents, can all easily be done using MS Word.

3. Creating and updating resume: One of the best tools to create your resumes and
is easy to edit and make changes in it as per your experience.

4. For Authors: Since separate options are available for bibliography, table of
contents, etc., it is the best tool which can be used by authors for writing books
and adjusting it as per the layout and alignment of your choice.

5. Also, creating a doc. File and converting it into PDF is a more suitable options, so
it is highly recommended.

What are the basic uses of MS Word?


1. to do write-ups

5. business letters

Options on how to create/open MS Word document in your computer:


1. Follow the steps in finding MS Word Steps: Left click Start – All programs –
MS Office – MS Word.
2. Find the icon of MS Word on the desktop then double click using the left click
on the mouse.
3. Find the icon of MS Word on the task bar the click once using the left click of
the mouse.

Study and understand the MS Word Screen and its elements.

Title bar - The title bar will tell you the name of the file, (example: document 1)
and the application you are currently using.

Minimize – will minimize Microsoft Word and place it at the bottom of your screen
on the Task Bar.

Close – will close Microsoft Word as well as your document.

Maximize – will increase the size of the window.

Menu bar – is a horizontal strip that contains lists of available menus for a certain
program. Resides at the top of each open window.

Standard toolbar – is located just below the menu bar. It contains buttons
representing commands such as new, open, save and print.

Formatting toolbar – provides access to several text formatting functions such as


font size and color, text alignment, lists, and the like.

Horizontal Ruler – is located just below your toolbars. It is used to adjust


margins, indent paragraphs, set tabs and adjust column widths.

Vertical Ruler – is often used to adjust the Top and Bottom margins of a
document.

Vertical Scroll Bar – allows you to scroll through the document top to bottom.

Horizontal Scroll Bar – allows you to scroll through the document left and right.

Task pane – are interface surfaces that typically appear on the right side of the
window within Word, Powerpoint, excel. It gives users access to interface
controls that run code to modify documents or emails, or display data from a data
source.

Status bar – is located at the bottom of the document window in Microsoft Word.
It provides information about the current state of what you are viewing in the
window.
