Within the business department, duties are generally subdivided into three major areas: advertising,

circulation, and promotion.

The business department looks after the sale of space, that is, advertising, and the sale of printed copies,
that is, circulation. The advertising section is concerned with the procurement of advertisements from
diverse sources such as advertising agencies, business houses and small individual advertisers. The
collection of advertising revenue is the job of the advertising section in the business department.

Similarly, for the sale of the newspaper/ magazine, the circulation section is charged with organizing the
network of hawkers/selling agents at the station where the newspaper/ magazine is published and at
other place where its copies, can be sold.

And the las one is The promotion division, The promotion division is responsible for increasing
circulation, building advertiser and readers’ interest in the paper, building goodwill, and demonstrating
that the paper is interested incommunity affairs. Newspaper promotion can involve sales and
subscription program, or it might take the shape of sponsoringconcerts, races, athletic leagues, and
other special events.

The business department has one sole aim, which is to find means of making money for the organization
via the newspaper. And how do they do this? Advertising spaces are sold to generate money for the
paper. Sales of the newspaper also generate revenue for the organization. Newspaper subscription is
also another major way newspapers generate income. Because of how crucial the above are to the
survival of the newspaper, in some big newspaper organizations, they have separate departments under
the business department that handle advertising and circulation of the paper. There is also a third
department that handles management.
