ACTIVITY 4: Reducing and Enlarging Formulas

1. The formula for a Ciprofloxacin otic drop is given in the literature as follows:
Cirpofloxacin 1g
Propylene glycol 50 mL
Glycerin q.s. ad 100 mL

How many grams of Ciprofloxacin would be required to prepare 200 15-mL bottles of
the ear drop?

2. From the literature, when the product Amevive® (Alefacept) is reconstituted with
sterile water for injection to prepare 0.6 mL, it contains the following in in each 0.5 mL:

Alefacept 7.5 mg
Sucrose 12.5 mg
Glycine 5 mg
Sodium hydrate, dihydrate 3.6 mg
Citric acid, monohydrate 0.06 mg

How much Alfacept (in grams) would be needed to manufacture a 5,000 batch of
vials for reconstitution?

3. Calculate the quantities required to produce 300 mL of Aromatic Magnesium

Carbonate using the formula:
Light magnesium carbonate 300 mg
Sodium bicarbonate 500 mg
Aromatic cardamom tincture 0.3 mL
Chloroform water 5 mL
Purified water qs 10 mL

4. Find the quantities needed to produce 50 g of product using the formula:

Calamine 2 parts
Yellow soft paraffin 38 parts

The total content contains 40 parts

5. Calculate the amounts of ingredients (sulfur, salicylic acid and white soft paraffin)
required to make 25 g:

Sulfur 6%
Salicylic acid 4%
White soft paraffin, to 100%
