Content Standard Addressed: SS3CG1 Describe the elements of representative democracy/republic
in the United States. a. Describe the three branches of national government: executive (president),
legislative (Congress), and judicial (Supreme Court of the United States)

Technology Standards Addressed: Empowered Learner 1B: Students build

networks and customize their learning environments in ways that support the learning process.
Selected Technology Tool:
☐ Socrative ☒ Quizizz ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms ☐ Flipgrid ☐
Blooket

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session: Will the teacher guide the class through the assessment or will students take it
on their own individually
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐

Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice
or Choice” during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is
student-driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and
determining the technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes
more of a facilitator.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student
work and promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s
morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will
introduce the SRT activity.
Prior to the SRT activity, I will introduce the topic of the branches of government to the class by
using an anchor chart. I will probe the question to the students “what do you know about the parts of
our government?” Students will all brainstorm ideas, people, and concepts that relate to our

government. The instructor will write and draw their ideas on the anchor chart, allowing a visible
component.

Then, students will all take a tablet or mobile device and will take the Quizizz quiz as a prior
knowledge check to see their understanding before the learning takes place.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☒ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ Formative
assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and mastery for ALL students) ☐
Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☒ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Students will all take a tablet or mobile device and will log on to Ouizizz via the link provided.
Students will then begin the Quizizz, and the teacher will be the facilitator of the classroom, helping
students log on and with issues if they arise. The Quizizz will take around eight minutes total. The
short length of the knowledge check quiz is meant to keep learners engaged. After ten minutes,
students lose focus and interest.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☒ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☒ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☒ Longer open-ended response

List two questions about your topic that requires an open-ended response. These questions
should prompt critical thinking skills and offer a variety of responses that may be acceptable.
1. Brainstorm how a citizen makes a difference in our government.
2. Design/brainstorm a way to get more citizens to vote and type your response in the box
below.

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some or all the questions
and display correct responses to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ No
Why or why not?
Students will not immediately see if their answer is correct or not simply because this is a prior
knowledge check. If students immediately see they are incorrectly answering questions, there is
possibility for a negative outlook on the topic. After the entire assessment, the instructor will gather
responses and assess how to adjust the instruction based on the needs of the students.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the SRT activity, students will then all use their mobile devices to watch an Edpuzzle which
includes a BrainPop video with questions throughout the video. This BrainPop video describes the
branches of government and discusses checks and balances. Students will watch this video and then
the instructor will then regroup the class. After learning about the branches of government, the class
will make a new anchor chart with their findings. Students will be able to raise their hand and share
what the branches are and what they do. The instructor will document the student findings. Link to the

How will the data be used?

The data will be collected by the instructor after the entire assessment. The scores will be documented
to aggregate and monitor individual progress. For example, writing down how many questions a
student answers correctly during the Quizizz will then be compared after the lesson to view the
knowledge development.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

Students will be encouraged to know what the three branches of government are after the lesson and
be confident in understanding what the branches do. Likewise, students will feel confident with
logging on to the various web-based platforms and understand how to navigate technology tools
safely and securely.

Reflective Practice:
Students will feel empowered and in control of their own learning. Students will be the masters of
their learning and control the pace of their learning while staying engaged.
