What is the Internet of Things?
The Internet of Things, or IoT, refers to the billions of physical devices
around the world that are now connected to the internet, all collecting and
sharing data. Thanks to the arrival of super-cheap computer chips and the
ubiquity of wireless networks, it's possible to turn anything, from
something as small as a pill to something as big as an aero plane, into a
part of the IoT. Connecting up all these different objects and adding
sensors to them adds a level of digital intelligence to devices that would
be otherwise dumb, enabling them to communicate real-time data without
involving a human being. The Internet of Things is making the fabric of the
world around us smarter and more responsive, merging the digital and
physical universes.
Characteristics of Internet of Things
Connectivity –
Connectivity is an important requirement of the IoT infrastructure. Things
of IoT should be connected to the IoT infrastructure. Anyone, anywhere,
anytime can connectivity should be guaranteed at all times without
connection, nothing makes sense.
Intelligence and Identity –
The extraction of knowledge from the generated data is very important. For
example, a sensor generates data, but that data will only be useful if it is
interpreted properly. Each IoT device has a unique identity. This
identification is helpful in tracking the equipment and at times for
querying its status.
Scalability –
The number of elements connected to the IoT zone is increasing day by day.
Hence, an IoT setup should be capable of handling the massive expansion. The
data generated as an outcome is enormous, and it should be handled
appropriately.
Dynamic and Self-Adapting (Complexity) –
IoT devices should dynamically adapt themselves to the changing contexts and
scenarios.  Assume a camera meant for the surveillance. It should be
adaptable to work in different conditions and different light situations
(morning, afternoon, night).

IoT is also an umbrella term for a broad range of underlying technologies

and services, which depend on the use cases and in turn are part of a
broader technology ecosystem which includes related technologies such as
artificial intelligence, cloud computing, next-gen cyber security, advanced
analytics, big data, various connectivity/communication technologies,
digital twins, augmented and virtual reality, block chain and more.

From a business perspective ecosystems, in the broad sense of partnerships,

collaborations, channel partnerships, alliances and ecosystems of
innovation/collaboration are also key to IoT
The interconnection of physical devices with embedded sensing and
communication possibilities, including sensors and actuators, is not new and
has a long history in the sense of M2M networks of which it is a next and
broader step. In the Internet of Things, physical endpoints are connected
through uniquely identifiable IP addresses; whereby data can be gathered,
aggregated, communicated and analyzed (increasingly at the edge of the
network: edge computing and fog computing) via embedded electronics and
software, IoT nodes and IoT gateways, additional connectivity technologies
and the cloud, networks and IoT platforms with a growing integration of AI,
IoT and other technologies such as block chain.
Research shows that there will be 35 billion smart devices online by 2021
and in the future of IoT this number will rise to 75 billion by 2025. So, it
is safe to say that IoT is growing at an enormous rate and so are the use
cases, trends and technologies surrounding it.
Companies across industries are investing in the IoT. They’re using the IoT
to provide consumers with a better experience and to increase the
effectiveness of their products and services. The goal? Overall, to make
life easier and better by automating tasks, improving health, making homes
and cars safer, and saving electricity and water, among other things.
