Literary Genres

* Students should be able define the term 'genre'.

*Students should be able to state different types of literary genres.


 
*Students should be able to list characteristics of specific literary genres.

What is a literary Genre?


A literary genre is a style of writing. In literature, the three primary genres of
literature are: Prose, Poetry, and Drama. 

Literary genres in literature


 
1. Prose- is a type of writing that contains paragraphs and sentences that have
proper grammar. (Tell the students we are focusing on prose this term)
 
2. Poetry- is the most intense form of writing. It allows a writer to express his or
her deepest emotions and thoughts in a very personal way. It relies heavily
structure. 
 
3. Drama- Drama is a literary work written to be performed in front of an
audience.

Each literary genres have sub genres.
