Writing Task 2

Agree or Disagree - Crime

29/6/2019
THEME: solution to crime
OPINION: sending criminals to prison is not effective < education
& training better
ANSWER:
Agree for some reasons
Introduction: 2 sentences
Background: Paraphrase (It is said …)
Thesis statement: answer the question
It is said by some people that sending criminals to prison is not the
best method, education and training are better instead. In my
opinion, I agree with this viewpoint.
It is said by some people that imprisonment is not as effective as
educational programs and training. In my opinion, this viewpoint is
completely reasonable/ justifiable for a number of reasons.
BODY 1: prison is not effective
Sending offenders to prison alone -> not able to change their
mindset -> unable to understand the consequences of their actions
-> after being released => (keep bad habit and inappropriate
perception + discriminated by others (criminal records) => have
difficulty finding a decent job/ fit into the community => many of
them recommit crime
BODY 2: Education is better long-term solution
Education: (literacy skills + legal knowledge): able to read & write
=> communicate with others -> learn new things (books,
newspapers) + avoid breaking the law
Training: vocational courses (textile, construction, engineering,
carpentry, cooking) => better job opportunities => make ends meet
=> support themselves

DISAGREE:
Education: A
Imprisonment: B
(A>B)
Disagree:
A=B
B>A
Body 1: education is good (of people)
Providing education and training can bring about beneficial effects
to some degree. In terms of education in places such as reform
centers, there will be more chance for criminals to improve their
literacy skills. Thanks to that, they could be able to read and write
and learn new things to upgrade their knowledge about different
aspects of life. Coupled with this is the opportunity to learn legal
knowledge, which enables them to avoid breaking the law again.
Regarding training associated with vocational programs such as
carpentry, engineering or construction, offenders can gain
necessary skills to apply for a decent job that allows them to make
ends meet. This encourages many of them to lead a better life and
get away from criminal activity.

At noon – Saturday

Body 2: however, imprisonment better

Increase safety for society (These days: dangerous criminals: serial
killers… -> permanently separated from community => ensure the
well-being of residents) (If present -> scare)
Warning -> potential criminals -> the same intention serve severe
punishment (life sentence) => act as a deterrent to future crime /
deter them from carrying out crime
Incarcerate
To some degree
Criminals = offenders = law breakers
Convicts = inmates = convicted felon
Incarnating offenders cannot completely (mitigate the problems
of criminality/ deal with crimes.) When a criminal serves many
years in a prison alone without any guidance or education, it is
likely that their mindset will be the same and they might keep
either their inappropriate behavior or perception after being
released. Coupled with this is the discrimination that they have to
suffer due to their criminal records. There might be difficulty for
them to get a decent job or fit into the community. All of these
factors possibly lead many of them to recommit crime and ruin
their future.

It is said by some people that imprisonment is not as effective as

educational programs and training. In my opinion, however,
sending criminals to prison would bring more significant benefits.
