Show and discuss visual aids, or use a song to catch their attention and
have them sing the tune, allowing them to connect with the sound, letters,
and words.
Show them a large print storybook with words and illustrations. You should
show them a photo of a cat, then point to each letter and pronounce it,
then say the entire word so they can learn how words relate.
While you are reading, stop to show them each picture and ask what they
think will happen next.
When you’re done, utilize the book for letter and word recognition
activities, asking individual students to point to and read specific letters and
words.
