Henry Van De Velde - The Complete Paintings And Drawings

Ludion 2021 ISBN 9789493039605 Acqn 31737
Hb 25x33cm 416pp col ills £85

Henry van de Velde (1863-1957) is considered one of the pioneers of modern architecture, but is
much less well-known for his work as a draughtsman and painter. Besides that, he was also a
talented visual artist. Ten years after completing his education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts
Antwerp, Van de Velde traded painting for applied arts and architecture. But it was only after his
death that interest in his creations as a painter took hold. This catalogue comprises roughly 60
paintings and 230 drawings, which together present an insightful and fascinating retrospective of
his multifaceted oeuvre. The book is compiled by Ronny van de Velde, with an introduction by
Xavier Tricot.

Gert Robijns - Re Set

Ludion 2021 ISBN 9789493039476 Acqn 31738
Hb 25x33cm 416pp col ills £45

Belgian artist Gert Robijns has spent the past decade working on his "Reset" concept, wherein
the recreation and revaluation of the landscape are key. In 2010, Robijns made a copy of the
small town of Gotem, his birthplace, out of white wood and metal on a scale of 75:100, including
the church and rectory. From then on, he became dedicated to following this idea of "Reset" in
various projects, among them Reset Charbon, a reflection on Limburg's mining history, and Reset
Mobile, a sort of temporary structure that can be erected in different places around the world to
function as an artist's studio. This publication presents an overview of the manifestations of Reset
by Robijns.

Gajoen - A Museum Hotel Of Japan Beauty

Bss Bijutsu 2021 ISBN 9784568120844 Acqn 31740
Hb 24x30cm 112pp col ills £50.75

In the interbellum period of the early 20th century, Japan enjoyed a fleetingly peaceful and vibrant
Belle Epoque. A diverse range of arts blossomed in the newly modernised nation, and it was
during this time that entrepreneur Rikizo Hosokawa built the original Meguro Gajoen hotel.
Sparing no expense, he purchased large numbers of works by Japanese artists, commissioned
ceiling, wall, and transom paintings, and employed carpenters, gardeners, sculptors, and lacquer
craftsmen to realise his vision. Today, the richly decorated rooms and interior spaces radiate this
great creative endeavour. This book offers an eye-opening account of the landmark Tokyo hotel
and its surprising heritage.

Endless - The Paintings Of Yamada Masaaki

Bss Bijutsu 2021 ISBN 9784568104912 Acqn 31742
Pb 21x29cm 336pp col ills £39

Yamada Masaaki (1929-2010) began his career as a self-taught artist amidst the chaos of post-
war Japanese society. He would end up creating some 5,000 paintings during his lifetime. Due to
his philosophical approach towards abstract painting, Yamada holds a unique position in the
history of Japanese modern art. He developed a unique, radical, and methodical painting style
that would independently mirror and foreshadow the artistic aesthetics and philosophies
developing in the West. With motifs such as stripes, crosses, and grids, the persistently
experimental approach to composition and colour theories reflected in his oeuvre has seen
reignited interest in recent years.

Spectre 3 - Contemporary Ruins

Cosa Mentale 2021 ISBN 9782491039066 Acqn 31745
Pb 25x31cm 208pp col ills £46.25

The third issue of 'Spectre' invites various artists to deliver their interpretation of contemporary
ruins. Ruins are necessary because they question our historical records, making us fleetingly
aware of a distance between a past meaning, which has been abolished, and a present
perception, which is incomplete. They introduce a temporal doubling, where the present is no
longer the epicentre of our perceptions. It is uncertain whether future history will be capable of
generating new ruins, but the contemporary capacity to leave significant ruins is undoubtedly
certain. Our era has and will continue to produce abandoned, unfinished, deteriorated, and
rapidly obsolete spaces.

Dane Lovett – Flowers

Perimeter Editions 2020 ISBN 9780648680147 Acqn 31720
Pb 22x29cm 104pp col ills £43

Dane Lovett's flower paintings both embrace and eschew their historical, thematic, and allegorical
roots. Dark and subtly tonal in palette, the works in his debut book reflect as equally on
minimalism and seriality as they do on the still life. This intriguing dynamic expands and further
articulates the Australian artist's culturally savvy and highly referential painting practice. Besides
other works portraying waterlilies and foxgloves, Lovett recasts French artist Henri Fantin-
Latour's still life 'Flowers: Tulips, Camellias, Hyacinths' (1864) in numerous murky,
monochromatic iterations - a single vase of flowers as a site for sustained painterly exploration,
variation, and rhythm.

Shelley Lasica - The Design Plot

Perimeter Editions 2021 ISBN 9780648680178 Acqn 31721
Pb 21x30cm 128pp col ills £43.50

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Shelley Lasica's practice has placed the
creative and processional machinations of dance and choreography at centre stage. Skirting
histories of visual, spatial and performance art as closely as she has embraced dance and
choreography, the Melbourne artist's propositions test the limits of the mediums in which they
operate, forever expanding contexts and posing questions of just what dance is and what it can
be as art. Lasica's debut book is at once organised and amorphous, with image sequences
fracturing and folding in on themselves amidst a measured, cumulative flow of gestures, people,
movements, and architectures.

Dutch artist Mark Manders' first solo exhibition in Japan is marked by this catalogue. His
acclaimed works are based on the concept of "self-portrait as a building", in which his sculptures
and objects are placed in multiple rooms of an entire building. His large installations are a
construction of the unique world of "Mark Manders", a fictional artist of the same name, in a self-
portrait consisting of numerous works that invoke complex emotions, distort the sense of time,
and encourage introspection. With texts by Douglas Fogle (curator), Midori Matsui (art critic), and
Yoshimi Zhensai (curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo).

Xavier Veilhan - The Drawing Center - Today's Specials

Les Presses Du Reel 2021 ISBN 9782378962494 Acqn 31771
Pb 16x21cm 232pp col ills £27

In March 2020, Parisian artist Xavier Veilhan started making drawings on a daily basis with a ruler
and compass. His interest in modernity is clearly visible in the references to Futurism and Op art
in this series of kinetic images on paper, a collection of moments when styles, explicit or implicit
references, geometrical figures, bold straight lines, and saturated colours dance across the page.
The drawings are presented in a curated mode both (approximately) chronological and (visually,
rhythmically) serial, strongly graphic but at the same time gathered under the overarching theme
of an artist's deep dive exploration of other modes of expression during the pandemic lockdown.

Bss Bijutsu 2021 ISBN 9784568105384 Acqn 31780
Hb 24x31cm 300pp col ills £166.50

The bright, complex, pop-inspired images of Tomokazu Matsuyama's signature style also offer a
contemplative look at cultural identity in the age of the internet. Born in Japan but living and
working in Brooklyn, New York, the prolific artist reflects on his own experience to explore the
personal implications of cross-cultural identity for a globalised generation. He freely blends art
histories from East and West while combining domestic motifs with both traditional and modern
patterns lifted from textiles, scrolls, wallpapers, and more. The result is both familiar and strange,
abstract and representative. Matsuyama presents an overview of his remarkable reality in two
volumes.

Dutch conceptual artist Fleur van Dodewaard provided the concept and instructions for a project
which became actualised in the small mountain village of Kamiyama, located on the island of
Shikoku in southern Japan. Fifteen inhabitants of the village were given a disposable camera and
asked to take pictures of objects, colours, movement, their loved ones, and their surroundings.
'Left Hand Right Hand' is the published outcome, a work referencing and created in the context of
the Covid-19 pandemic. Van Dodewaard's goal is to celebrate freedom in times of restrictions,

sequence that aspires to be a rendering of the history of art in the age of social media. From the
book's pages emerges the vastness of a virtual museum that grows instantaneously, one selfie at

The Artworks Of Shintaro Miyake

Bss Bijutsu 2019 ISBN 9784568105025 Acqn 31797
Pb 15x21cm 288pp col ills £41.75

Shintaro Miyake belongs to the Kawaii generation, yet his seemingly purely whimsical approach
is remarkable for the ways in which he plays with both Japanese and Western historical and
cultural symbols. The artist makes large-scale drawings and detailed scenes featuring recurring
characters and distinctive figures - with ovular heads, wide-set eyes, and open mouths - but he is
also known for drawing character portraits while wearing hand-made costumes of the characters.
The creative act thus becomes a performance, an expression of self-portraiture. This broad look
at Miyake's oeuvre includes drawings, installations, public artworks, and documentations of
artistic actions.
