GRAMMAR

The Focus of This Bootcamp Lesson Is to Teach You How to Talk about Your Ethnicity.

To talk about your ethnicity, you add the word for "person," khon, in front of the name of a
country. Let's take a look at some examples with the country listed first, followed by the
ethnicity.

For Example:

Thai "English"

thai "Thailand"

khon-thai "Thai"

áawt-sà-dtree-liia "Australia"

à-mee-rí-gaa "America"

khon-à-mee-rí-gan "American"

yîi-bpùn "Japan"

khon-yîi-bpùn "Japanese"

ang-grìt "England"

khon-ang-grìt "English"

Expressing Ethnicities

Here are some examples showing you how to express ethnicity in Thai.

For Example:

1. phûuak-rao bpen khon-à-mee-rí-gan khráp/khâ.


"We're American."

2. khun bpen khon-yîi-bpùn khráp/khâ.
"You're Japanese."

Word Order in Simple Thai Sentences

The above sentences demonstrate the basic word order of a Thai sentence:

Subject + Verb + Object

This is the same as English sentence order.

For Example:

1. phǒm/dì-chǎn bpen khon-à-mee-rí-gan.


Literally, "I am American."
"I am American."

2. phǒm/dì-chǎn dùuem chaa.


Literally, "I – drink – tea."
"I drink tea."

3. khǎo phûut phaa-sǎa-yîi-bpùn.


Literally, "He – speaks – language – Japanese."
"He speaks Japanese."
