ONE: INTRODUCTORY BACKGROUND

What is the focus of your architectural project?
§ Structural integrity OR
§ Functional needs of a buildings users OR
§ Aesthetic quality of the built environment
What sub-theme or combination of sub-themes will you investigate? Describe it in detail in
relation to your choice of built environment? Why did you choose the sub-theme(s)? [you can use
photographs, sketches to define and describe your sub-theme and why you have chosen it]
§ Materials and construction technology
§ Design for special needs
§ Digital computing
§ Photographic history in context with seminal writing
§ Building services and technology
§ Environmental Design
§ Curtain walling systems
§ Traditional construction technology
§ Recycling, reuse of materials in construction
§ Building sytems and control
§ Design for emergencies
§ Conservation & Preservation
§ Sustainable Design and Appropriate Technology
§ Interior design and Detailing
§ Child recreation and Safety

SLIDE 2: RESEARCH METHODS & CASE STUDY

The Case Study is both a process and product of documenting data/information about a building
through text, sketches, photographs, plans, sections, elevations, perspectives, axonometrics.

The purpose of a case study is to help you understand the ideas behind the planning, design &
construction of a building so you may learn from it and apply these lessons in your own architectural
designs.

CASE STUDY CRITERIA
The case studies MUST be related to your area of focus and sub-theme(s)

CASE STUDY CHECKLIST
R Site information: Geographical location, landmarks; Historical context; Climate and micro-climatic
considerations; Topography, Geology, Fauna and Flora; Access and Circulation; Public Utilities ie
water supply, waste water disposal, storm water drainage, energy sources; Neignbourhood
activities, views, vistas, sources of noise
R Planning concept
o Site planning and landscaping
o Horizontal and vertical zoning of spaces
o Hierarchy and Typology of spaces
o Circulation routes including universal access
R Choice of Building materials and Construction technology
o Construction materials, components, systems and techniques
o Structural systems
o Building Services: natural and artificial lighting; heating, ventilation and air conditioning;
water supply and sanitation, fire safety, building conveyancing systems, waste disposal,
communication and security systems, Energy supply and efficiency
o Building operation and maintenance
R User behaviour and demographic data
R Building form and design

CASE STUDY ANALYSIS
Lessons that can be applied to the planning, design and construction of your design project that ate
related to your area of focus and sub-theme.
