Beaver Falls, PA
Geneva Lesson Plan
Name: Abby Duvall Date: Monday September 27 Time:
Subject: Science Grade Level: 4th grade
I. Topic & General Goal Scientists: Inventors and Models
II. Reference to PA or 3.4.4.B1: Describe how technology affects humans in various
Common Core ways.
Standards 3.4.4.B3: Explain why new technologies are developed and old
ones are improved in terms of needs and wants.

III. Lesson Objectives - The student will be able to give examples of inventors and
what they invented.
- The student will be able to give reasons why scientists use
both the field and lab to do experiments.
- The student will be able to give an example of a model.
IV. Materials - Science book
- Highlighter
- Science journal
- Whiteboard and markers
V. A. Introduction I will introduce this lesson by asking students if they know any
scientists. I will accept any answers from famous scientists to
family and friends who they may know who scientists are. I will
then ask if they know what the term “inventor” means and if they
know any inventors of things.
B. Procedures 1. I will ask students to take out their science books, journals and
highlighters. We will start on page 43 and read about the
inventors John Diebold and Martin Culpepper. As we read, I will
ask students what the items these men invented were and how
they can be used.
2. We will then go to the next page and read the captions about
using both the field and the lab. I will ask students the “Think
about it!” question on the page and we will talk about why it is
important that scientists utilize both the field and the lab.
3. We will flip to the next page that is the beginning of Lesson 5
titled “What Kinds of Models do Scientists Use?”.
4. We will read pages 46 and 47 about what a “model” and a
“two-dimensional model” are. Students will highlight the
definitions to these words in their books and will write the words
and page numbers in their journals.
5. I will tell the students that we will be using models over the
next few days in science as we will be doing an experiment! I
will tell students that they need to have a good idea of what a
model is, because tomorrow they will be creating their own
models!
C. Differentiation Process: I began this lesson by asking students if they knew any
scientists and any inventors. This connects the process of the
lesson to their own lives, helping engage student’s interests and
previous knowledge.
D. Closure I will conclude this lesson by asking students, as they line up, to
grab a whiteboard marker and write an example of a model they
have seen or read about on the whiteboard. I will take a picture of
their answers and then will be able to discuss these examples
with them the next day.
VI. Assessment - The student will be able to give examples of inventors and
what they invented.
Assessment: Students will do this during the introduction when
I ask them if they know any inventors. We will also talk about
this at the end of the page about inventors. I will ask students at
the end if they can tell me what the two inventors created.
- The student will be able to give reasons why scientists use
both the field and lab to do experiments.
Assessment: I will assess this when I ask students the “Think
about it” question through our class discussion.
- The student will be able to give an example of a model.
Assessment: This will be assessed when students write
examples of a model that they know or have seen on the
whiteboard.
VII. Modifications and/or I will continually ask students with ADHD questions and keep
Accommodations them engaged in order to minimize their distraction.
