CLI commands
The ‘X’ in AXOS represents ‘extensible,’ as AXOS operates on multiple Calix E-Series systems. Because the
AXOS CLI interface is not fully context sensitive, some CLI commands are visible in the CLI interface that
may not be applicable to all systems. To avoid unexpected results or error messages when configuring
systems, do not execute inapplicable commands. Refer to the AXOS user documentation for configuration
guidance. For the supported features for each AXOS system and release, refer to its product planning guide.

About AXOS “always on” patch upgrades

The AXOS “always on” upgrade feature allows minor software patches to be applied to active/in-service
AXOS systems without requiring a card/system reload to take effect. AXOS software consists of many
Device Manager (DM) components, with some capable of a live restart. An always-on patch upgrade only
applies to DMs that can be restarted. Note that while these DM restarts can be executed live without a full
system reset, some restarts may still cause a momentary service disruption for that application (impact varies
by DM). Once a given patch software image is downloaded onto a system (but not activated), you can use
the CLI ‘show upgrade image impact’ command to identify the expected impact of the patch; the CLI
returns a message describing the restart impact.
When Calix issues an AXOS always-on software patch, that release will be available in two formats:
• Patch only: A small-sized software image with only the patch code; for use on systems already
running the full AXOS release (ex: “PatchRelease_AXOS_<System>_R21.3.0..run”)
• Full release: A complete AXOS software release that includes the patch; for use on systems not yet
running the full AXOS release, requiring a full upgrade (ex:
“FullRelease_AXOS_<System>_R21.3.0.2.run”)

Transceiver module usage guidelines

Be advised of the following considerations around use of third-party Ethernet transceiver modules:
• AXOS allows the use of third-party Ethernet transceiver modules in AXOS systems (software
enforcement for Calix-keyed 10G/40G/100G Ethernet transceiver modules was removed in
R20.3). Calix still recommends using Calix-supplied optical modules and/or DA cables wherever
possible to assure supported operation, as these modules have been thoroughly tested and verified
for all supported use cases.
• AXOS E-Series systems equipped with very high-speed Ethernet trunk ports (100G/40G Ethernet)
require use of transceivers that conform to specific clauses under the IEEE 802.3-2015 standard for
supported operation. Failure to use conforming "in-spec" modules or DA cables may damage the
equipment and could void the AXOS hardware warranty. Refer to Calix bulletin AXOS QT-20-004
for complete details.

Upgrade Considerations
AXOS "reload" command options
Software enhancements in Releases 21.3 and 21.2 allow E7-2 systems equipped with cards in both slots
(dual-card systems) to be reset in sequence instead of in parallel (reload all). The ‘sequenced’ option
limits temporary outage impact to half the system at a time, instead of the full system at once.
For E7-2 dual-card systems, the following software upgrade reset options and constraints apply:
• Upgrades from release 21.2 to 21.3:
o During the upgrade process, you may use “reload all” or "reload all sequenced" successfully.
• Upgrades from releases 21.1and lower:
o During the upgrade process, ONLY use "reload all" to reset the system; DO NOT use the
"reload all sequenced" option.
CAUTION: Using the unsupported “reload all sequenced” command to reset the system
may result in unexpected errors, including network outages from transport going down.

New system turn-ups with ONTs

After initial system turn-up, upgrade to the latest AXOS system software version before connecting
ONTs. Upgrade AXOS first, load the latest ONT firmware image(s) on the OLT, and then attach
associated ONTs to the PON. Newly arriving ONTs will be automatically upgraded as needed.
ONT upgrade times
ONT download times increase as the number of ONTs on the system increases. This can result in
lengthy ONT upgrade times. Workaround: Prior to the maintenance window, ONT software
should be installed on the AXOS system and downloaded onto the ONT. Activation and commit
will then be performed during the maintenance window.
E3-2 systems reload time
For E3-2 system upgrades to AXOS-R21.3, for the final step of the upgrade process (reload), the
system will automatically reboot twice. This is by design, necessary for the successful upgrade to
release 21.3. For future upgrades from 21.3, there will only be one reboot.
E3-2 systems with an empty access module slot
If an E3-2 has an empty slot for a PON interface module that has been removed, be sure to remove
any provisioning against the removed module before upgrading to avoid database conversion issues.

Resolved Issues
This section describes software issues that have been resolved in this release.
Resolved in 21.3.0

Area Issue Description

Number
Active AXOS-34318 For E7-2 AE OLTs with internally-managed ONTs, if the system time is
Ethernet modified for Daylight Savings (DST), the GE-24 r2 does not push the
DST update down to linked ONTs, causing caller ID time to show up
incorrectly.
Data AXOS-36490 When an E7-2 XG801 has cross-card LAG configured for ELINE with
Services mac-learning disabled, traffic is dropped.
Data AXOS-36430 ARP replies are dropped between cards when interface VLAN is
Services configured in the same VLAN with MFF for ETH UNI.
Data AXOS-36355 When a DHCP lease is removed by NACK, no termination event is posted
Services to terminate the lease.
Ethernet PXA-5454 The configuration range for 10GE-12 40G eth-uni ingress/egress
maximum bandwidth rate is incorrect and no default value exists.
Ethernet AXOS-8460 Although the system allows the hash method to be provisioned on each
LAG interface, the system uses the same hash method on all LAGs. The
hash method used is the last one provisioned.
Ethernet AXOS-36809 If an E7-2 10GE-12 port connects to an EXA Ethernet port using a 10GE
Direct-Attach SFP+ copper cable, following any system reboot or link
down condition, the link won't restore until you toggle the Speed setting
on the E7-2 10GE interface.
Ethernet AXOS-36221 After receiving an erps-ring-down alarm, some but not all services are
interrupted on a ring node, and the node shows Disconnected in SMx
even though it is not down.
Ethernet AXOS-35538 A DWDM optic module might display different values for the current-
status and latched-status. The 'show interface ethernet' output might
contain a cached value instead of the current value.
Ethernet AXOS-35363 In G.8032 rings where links are configured with "ccm-protection auto,"
after replacing a card or adding a new node in the ring, the ring may not
switch back to an "idle" state post-replacement due to some links
reporting "cfm-fail."
Ethernet AXOS-35170 On systems with active/standby cards, if the native VLAN mode is
changed after being applied to interfaces (ex: N:1 to ELAN), the standby
card may report a "Degraded" state after a system reset.
Monitoring AXOS-37089 Following a PON card reset, such as during a software upgrade, some
ONTs may not respond to SNMP polls (ONT IfEntry could not be found)
due to a fast timeout issue.
Monitoring AXOS-26316 VCA results may incorrectly show sequence errors.

ONU PXA-4460 ONT upgrade times are exceeding two hours, which exceeds the
committed requirements. Extended OMCI messages (Disabled for 3rd
party interopt) is enabled, which results in a reduction in download time
from 16 minutes to 2 minutes per 8 ONTs per line card (which are
upgraded in parallel). Calix is investigating future improvements to meet
the requirement.

AXOS R21.3.0 Release Notes: E7-2, E3-2 Page 8 of 13

Area Issue Description

Number
ONU AXOS-34110 When using the XG801 for GPON services (with 801Gv2 ONUs), if traffic
class provisioning is incomplete for an ONU service, the ONU may cycle
between departure and arrival.
PON AXOS-35219 XG801 line cards may not automatically reboot (to recover) after
encountering multiple restarts of critical container/app manager
applications. If this occurs, you will not be able to manage PONs or
ONUs on the system, although existing services may be unaffected.
PON AXOS-34974 The PON CIR over-subscription check fails to work as expected in
various scenarios.
Software AXOS-36758 A G.8032 alarm ['g8032-fop-to' (G.8032 Failure of Protocol Time Out)]
Upgrade won't clear after an upgrade to R21.2.x (or lower) if the process used to
reset the E7-2 cards included the unsupported 'reload sequenced'
option.
Software AXOS-36448 After canceling an upgrade via 'upgrade cancel' command, the
Upgrade tmp_install directory is not deleted and a disk space alarm persists in
active alarms.
Software AXOS-35243 On a two-card E7-2 system (with GPON8 r2, 10GE-12, or GE-24 r2), if
Upgrade less than 1.5GB of flash space is available and if an upgrade fails or is
canceled, a sync issue between the active and standby cards may cause
a continuous reboot that cannot be recovered.
System AXOS-36059 The system erroneously allows you to add both a static IP host (L3) and
a static L2 IP host to the same ONT Ethernet interface, but then does
not allow you to delete more than one of the entries.
System AXOS-35413 In release 21.1, an erroneous max limit of 12 VLANs on an E7-2 ENNI
interface was introduced. Upon attempting to provision more than 12
VLANs, the provisioning is blocked by the system.
System AXOS-35354 Output from 'show sensor' command is inconsistent between E3-2 units.

System AXOS-35311 The "show inventory psmodules" command may only display info for one
power supply (ps) module even when 2 modules are present on the E3-
2.
System AXOS-35257 The IPDR data sent from E3-2 has the following issues:
1. The Channel Set data is being sent as 0x00, which is an invalid
ChannelSet in DOCSIS, so the record is rejected (should be 0x01).
2. Two records for the same Service Flow are sent for each interval,
with the second record arriving 2 minutes after the first. This duplication
may cause unexpected behavior.
System AXOS-35145 When reverting from R21.2, DHCPv4 leases for data are removed and
traffic drops.
System AXOS-33926 An "olttcmgrd" core is observed following generation of the techlog.

System AXOS-33907 The IPDR collector fails to connect to an OLT over IPv6.

System AXOS-33308 ZTP/Call Home is not supported on CE201, XG801 1/q1 uplink
interfaces.
User AXOS-35310 The 'show ont status' command reports 'dying-gasp-enabled' = 'false' if
Interfaces the ONT does not report its dying gasp capability, whether or not dying
gasp is actually supported by the ONT.
User AXOS-35299 On E7-2 XG801 cards, if > 512 ONUs are provisioned with service-stats-
Interfaces group, PON and ONT-related show commands may fail.

Area Issue Description

Number
User AXOS-34660 For XG801/CE201 100G eth-uni interfaces, configuration ranges, egress/
Interfaces ingress maximum values, and default values may not display correctly
via show commands (e.g., "show interface ethernet 1/1/q1 status").
Video AXOS-35357 IGMP group responses may be suppressed on E7-2 nodes in a G.8032
Services sub ring (off main ring), causing intermittent loss of video on such
nodes.

Open Issues
This section describes known open software issues in this release.
Area Issue Description
Number
Active AXOS-37377 For AE applications with internally-managed AE ONTs, after an AXOS
Ethernet OLT upgrade, several AE ONT config file alarms may be raised.
Active AXOS-35612 For GE-24r2 AE applications with internally-managed AE ONTs, a
Ethernet heartbeat failure may cause the GE-24r2 to not show any discovered AE
ONTs (via 'show discovered-ae-onts'). Workaround: Reset the GE-24r2
card.
Data AXOS-37330 On rare occasions, following an ERPS ring recovery event, data and
Services video subscribers may be unable to pass DHCP traffic. Workaround:
Remove the "l2-dhcp-profile" from impacted VLANs and disable mff,
source-verify in those VLANs.
Data AXOS-37109 On rare occasion following a system reload or reboot, data service on
Services one or more ONTs may not reestablish due to an upstream DBA issue.
General AXOS-17252 If an E3-2 has an empty slot for a PON interface module that has been
Notes, removed, be sure to remove any provisioning against the removed
Upgrade module before upgrading to avoid database conversion issues.

Monitoring AXOS-29217 For E7-2 dual-card systems with card 2 as the active controller: After a
switchover, IPDR data flows are sent a second time during the same
interval, resulting in double flow entries to the collector. (Note: This
does not occur if card 1 is active.)
Monitoring AXOS-21747 IPFIX provisioning erroneously accepts the provisioning of duplicate ie-
id's, causing potentially the external IPFIX collector to terminate the
session to the E7-2.
ONU AXOS-7051 The E7-2 will not automatically unlink/relink an ONT if a new ONT
arrives reporting the configured registration-ID. Workaround: Using
ONT replacement by registration-ID requires utilize the "ont unlink".
ONU AXOS-35053, During an ONT image upgrade, an "ont-pwe3-rmon-session-tca" error is
35038 raised, indicating that data traffic drops are occurring on other ONTs
during the downloading of the ONT image.
ONU AXOS-34973 When using the XG801 for GPON services, if two services with the same
pon-cos are provisioned on the same ONU, upstream traffic drops may
occur. Workaround: To avoid this issue, ensure that services with the
same pon-cos are not provisioned on the same ONU. (This can be
checked by issuing the "show ont <ont-name> qos" command. No two
rows of output should have the same pon-cos value.)+
ONU AXOS-34940 An "ONT_PROVISIONING_ERROR" alarm was raised while ONTs were
being turned up and new ONTs were not getting discovered.
ONU AXOS-32399 Following the replacement of an existing ONT with a different model ONT
that has a different profile-id, an "ont-eth-down" alarm was raised that
remained active even after one of the ONTs was deleted. Workaround:
Users can hide the alarm from the user interface (CLI or Netconf) by
using another CLI "manual shelve instance-id <instance-id>" (for
example 150.292) without rebuilding the interface or by using the CLI
"alarm-suppression enabled/disabled" command if the interface is
rebuilt.

Part # 240-01761-10
AXOS R21.3.0 Release Notes: E7-2, E3-2 Page 11 of 13

Area Issue Description

Number
ONU AXOS-17174 When pre-provisioning an ONT Ethernet interface, a semantic check is
not applied to require a pon-cos-profile for user pon-cos values at the
ont level before provisioning PON upstream CoS settings on a service.
This can cause the provisioning to be rejected at ONT linkage time.
ONU AXOS-16198 Changing a module type from GP401 to NG201 (or vice-versa) without
deleting the ONT provisioning first causes a running-config-suspect-
alarm to be issued. Workaround: Delete the ONT provisioning before
switching the module type.

PON AXOS-36245 On an NGPON2-4 card with many GP1100X ONTs attached, disabling
DBA on the PON may cause an ONT to depart and re-arrive repeatedly if
the total committed upstream bandwidth exceeds PON capacity.
PON AXOS-35156 On XG801 line cards with 100G-ER4 optics and FEC disabled, one-way
packet loss may occur.
System AXOS-9051 ARP failed to resolve and ping failed when scaling 100 IPv6 static hosts.

System AXOS-8959 Ipv6 neighbor table failed to resolve the static ipv6 subscriber mac after
de-provisioning/re-provisioning the ONU.
System AXOS-37334 Following a power outage (or similar event that causes a large number
of CPE to reset and come back at the same time), some DHCP client
leases may be slow to restore due to congested queues causing delayed
Offers. Workaround: Disable all card PON ports first (shut), then re-
enable (no shut) the PON ports one at a time, several minutes apart
each, to restore service.
System AXOS-36746 AXOS failure to read a card's BID from backplane EEPROM may result in
SMx not showing the Serial Number, hardware version, and MAC
address for that system. Workaround: Re-seat or power cycle the card.
System AXOS-34881 Long lead times are observed with SNMP following a restoration of the
database on a GE-24r2 dual card system.
System AXOS-32818 The downstream FEC configuration can't be changed successfully if the
PON port is enabled due to an Aspen chip limitation.
System AXOS-32732 Using the "set-cevlan-pcp" command in a policy map when incoming
traffic is untagged causes the E7-2 to incorrectly create an additional tag
when untagged traffic enters an ONT port.
System AXOS-32353 The MAC address the for IPv6 static hosts on a GPON ONT failed to
resolve following the subscriber activation.
System AXOS-32171 Following a reboot, communication with an E3-2 was lost for 20 minutes
and required two power cycles before communications were restored.
System AXOS-31034 After reloading a card on a node, the link between the two nodes
remained blocked and the sub-ring did not make the expected switch.
As a result, the service on two of the nodes stopped. As sub-rings are
not designed to handle major ring events, Calix recommends that users
house major ring ports on a different card than the sub-ring to avoid
this issue.
System AXOS-31017 Following the addition of new ONTs into the system, the upstream SNMP
manager began to experience interruptions in receiving SNMP responses
from the E7-2, which caused gaps to occur in the graphing data.
Eventually, there was no new data to display in the graphs.
System AXOS-28778 The test call feature specified by the open OMCI allows for a test-tone-
wait-seconds setting of up to 255 seconds. However, the E7-2/E9-2
times-out if users specify a wait time greater than 120 seconds.

AXOS R21.3.0 Release Notes: E7-2, E3-2 Page 12 of 13

Area Issue Description

Number
System AXOS-27204 Using a copper SFP in an E3-2 WAN module SFP+ port may work if you
use all default settings for port speed/duplex; however, the port will
always show link UP (oper-state up) for the interface status.
System AXOS-26036 On rare occasions, E7-2 cards in the same chassis may have different
SSH keys, causing the "Host key verification failed" warning when
logging in. Workaround: Use "generate ssh-host-keys" to synchronize
SSH keys between cards.
System AXOS-21298 Due to a chip limitation, the downstream egress shaper can pass more
than 700kps traffic when 3SP-5SP-EPM max bandwidth is set to 384kps.
System AXOS-17039 When retrieving AE config filenames from a standby card, the prompt
message is listing the filenames from master card.
System AXOS-16003 Units are inconsistent across WAN, PON, ONT interfaces (pps, bps,
kbps).
System AXOS-13782 DHCP leases can take a long time to populate in SMx, at about 15
seconds per 500 leases. The alternative is to use the top-left-hand
search box and select search type of "DHCP" to search for an individual
IP address.
Upgrade AXOS-34960 Following an upgrade, existing pm bins stored in memory will be lost in
the pm session after ISSU because of an incompatible change on the pm
session checkpoint format (stream to object). This occurs even though
those checkpoints are synced to the card with new release software. The
pm bins will be recreated along with the new pm session. Workaround:
Users must retrieve all the pm bins before the ISSU upgrade.
Upgrade AXOS-34833 Following an image upgrade using "upgrade activate" command where
the running image does not have PMON security support and the
upgrade image does have security support, the PMON FLASH will be
upgraded to support security. If the upgrade is cancelled, the PMON will
enable security on the next reboot or power-cycle and the image
running will not be PMON security aware. This means that in the cases
that security needs to be temporarily turned off for a specific PMON
function, the security will not be turned off and the function will fail.
User AXOS-35513 For E7-2 XG801 cards, the input current reading (via "show sensors
Interfaces current") is shown to be 20% higher than the actual correct value.
User AXOS-31976 When retrieving PM data from ONT-Ethernet and PON interfaces, the CLI
Interfaces reports total upstream and downstream packets but SMx does not, due
to a NETCONF RPC schema issue.
User AXOS-31681 The CLI erroneously allows you to modify the GP1100X ont-eth port's
Interfaces interface speed from auto to 10G even though the LAN port is a 2.5G
port, triggering an ont-prov-fail alarm.
User AXOS-30602 The CLI accepts port descriptions over 63 characters long even though
Interfaces the limit is set to 63.

Note: For ONU-related issues, see the release notes for the latest-compatible ONU firmware releases.
