DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION During normal operation the Buchholz relay is full ofl and is connected to the gas sampling device via pipelines 10 and 11 Volves (8), (2) and (9) are open. Volves (3), 4), (6 or (7) are close. The gas sompling device is consequently also fll of cil Sompling procedures are os follows: A To sample oil: open valve (6) or [4) B- To sample gos ifthe relay hos signalled alarm or tripped the transformer: (pen vahe 4 and let he cil inthe device fow out. This draws any gos from the relay via vale (8), tube (11) ond valve (2) into the body ofthe gas. The progress of his operation can be checked through the inspection window. When the desired amount of gas has been collected close valves (2} and (4) ond open valve (3] fo take the sample. © To test satisfactory operation ofthe alarm and trp circuits proceed os follows: ‘Close valve (2) then drain all the oil rom the device by opening valves (3) and (4). Attach an cir pump (bicycle pump) or kit from Comem 5400806002) to valve (5). Close valves (3) and (4) and pump fost whilst simultaneously opening valve (2). The a wil thon oss into the upper chamber ofthe Buchholz relay va pipeline (11) lowering the lats andl consequenly closing their contacts. you ‘wish fo test the lower lt then First the vake between the relay and the conservator must be closed to prevent air from flowing direc: ty into the conservatr. OPERATION STARTING Caution: After commissioning ensure the Buchholz relay and the sampling device are both filled with oil. 24 se GAS SAMPLING DEVICE WITH APPLICATION OF THE BUCHHOLZ RELAY OIL DRAIN COCK PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION The presence of gas inside on oil filed transformer is always a sign of malfunction and one of the tasks of the Buchholz relay is to Signal tis presence. Ancysis of he evolved gos con offen give good indication of the type of malfunction but accessing the Buchholz relay during live operation ofthe transformer can be hozardous, The gos sampling device os follows hos boon designed to overcome this problem by sting the unit remo from the Buchholz and in readily ecessible postion typically on the side ofthe transformer. v0 ns CONSTRUCTION The Comem gas sampling device is manufactured from an aluminium alloy costing with the following fitings: ‘A tempered glass inspection window with graded markings for velume indication. +A go sampling valve (2) + A bleed valve (3) 4A g0s inlet valve for pneumatic testing (5). + Avale for draining oll rom the relay (ths can be mounted on the right or let hand side ofthe body (6) or (7) 4s 0 routine fest ol castings ore tested by injecting ambient air at 2.5 bar for 2 minutes, ‘A cortficae to this effect is supplied with the uni. forthe sake of stondordisotion the device is fied with the lft and right hn valve supports but only one wave Customer can then choose which side he prefers. * Wib fitings for ouside dia, 10 tubes, code 1RDPGO00OS {standlor); «wih fitings for ouside dio. 6 tubes, code TRDPGO0006 (on eques|; + wih fitings for outside dio. 8 tubes, code IRDPGO0O07 (on requ!) 23
