CHAPTER ONE
GETTING STARTED
First and foremost, I want to start by thanking you for picking up this workbook.
Your support means the world to me, and my entire goal with this book is to
help support you in return.
Most players have limited knowledge of the technical aspects of poker. They
may know how often a flush draw completes or how often they need to be
good to make a profitable hero call on the river. But at some point, their tech-
nical deficiencies will make it impossible to optimize their lines.
Developing a technical understanding of the game is what accelerates
you into intermediate and advanced skill levels. Internalizing frequencies
of important things happening, automating essential calculations, and
exploring common situations from multiple points of view will help you in
every session.
Too many players avoid this work because it is scary. Some avoid it because
it is time-consuming. Others avoid it because it seems too theoretical and
not applicable enough. But whatever reason they give for avoiding studying
the technical side of poker, they miss a massive opportunity for growth.
Poker is a game of math, and technical skills are the crux of a timeless stra-
tegic foundation. Poker will continue to mature, with various bet sizes and
plays rising and fading in popularity. A strong technical understanding allows

you to see beyond fads and trends by recognizing the flaws in them and how
to beat them with ease.
That is what this workbook aims to do.
The goal is that repetition of important concepts will help you retain the infor-
mation. Learn it, practice it, retain it, and use it at the tables. By doing this kind
of work, you will develop an intuition for poker’s technical side and be able to
use it for the duration of your career.
HOW TO USE THIS WORKBOOK
Given the valuable nature of this kind of exploration, you will get the most
substantial benefit if you:
1. Complete the entire workbook
2. Do everything in order since the later exercises will simultaneously
utilize multiple concepts from earlier chapters
3. Commit to completing at least a few exercises per day
4. Grind through the “boring” parts
Even if you think you know a concept 100%, do the section anyway. Extra
practice never hurts, and you might find a knowledge gap along the way.
On a related note, given that this workbook is for intermediate to advanced
players, it is assumed that you understand the basic poker math. There are
many links to related content in the preliminary chapters, but if you consis-
tently feel lost, I suggest you complete the Poker Math & Preflop Workbook,
which takes a more beginner-intermediate approach to the math and
formulas.

THE POSTFLOP POKER WORKBOOK
When going through this workbook, you will see a double underline whenever
you need to do a calculation or give an answer.
Do you see this question?
Speaking of calculations, always round to the nearest whole number. Your
brain will not calculate 48.61% at the tables, and you will actually fail to retain
complex numbers effectively. So round both monetary and percentage
answers to a simple number.
Finally, to simplify the math when doing hand history analysis, all cash game
hands will be at $5/$10 blinds, and tournament hands will be at $500/$1,000
blinds with no antes, straddles, or other modifiers. This is not to say that
any range, calculation, or assumption is specific to that stake or blind level.
Instead, these are round numbers that are easier to work with.
THE ANSWER KEY
I personally hate workbooks where I need to flip back and forth in the book to
check my answers. Even in digital formats, it is annoying.
So I created a free downloadable copy of the answer key for you. Just go to
www.splitsuit.pro/postflop to grab it. You can print it out, use it in side-by-
side windows on your computer, or whatever works best for you

Other software will also work for most chapters, including Equilab (the basic
version is free) and PokerCruncher (for Mac users). Just use software that you
are familiar with.
GOOD LUCK
With all of that said, it is finally time for you to get started. As for pacing, you
can go through this workbook as quickly or slowly as you like. Seasoned
players should complete this book within a few weeks, but the newer you are
to this kind of work, the longer it will take. Make it your goal to do at least a
few exercises each day. This has the added benefit of continually making
progress, developing a positive habit, and also increasing retention.
Take a deep breath - you are going to do great!
