A Portuguese explorer was sailing for the
country of Spain . On the “First World
Circumnavigation” performed by
Ferdinand Magellan, he found an
archipelago. The discovery by him and his
crew were the first well documented
arrival of European in the island
(Homonhon Island, Samar, Philippines) .
He named the island “La Islas de San
Lazaro” as it was St. Lazarus day when
they reached the island.

•During the stay of Magellan on the
island, he befriended some island chiefs,
especially Rajah Humabon of Cebu.
•They sealed their alliance through
Pacto de Sangre. Rajah Humabon, his
wife, his subjects and the other 800
inhabitants were the first to convert in
Christianity.
•After baptizing as Catholic, he was then
named as “Don Carlos”.
•The first Santo Nino relic was given as
a gift.

Magellan sailed to Mactan, Cebu to
continue his conquest.
However, Lapu-Lapu, the local chief of
Mactan, strongly disagreed with the
proposal of Magellan and the order of
Humabon.
According to Antonio Pigafetta, the
Battle of Mactan consisted of Magellan
with his 50 troop members against
Lapu-Lapu and his 1,500 warriors.

Magellan were killed by the natives led by Lapu-Lapu.
After Magellan was killed, Spain sent different expedition to explore again the island but
failed.

Spanish explorer, named the
island, “La Islas Filipinas” in
honor of the Prince of Asturia
who later become King Philip
II of Spain.

Miguel Lopez de Legazpi
made an expedition to Las
Islas Filipinas.
He formed an alliance with
different island chiefs through
baptizing them. These islands
are Samar, Bohol, Leyte and
Cebu.

The Spaniards set up a fire on the camps in the island of Cebu as Datu Topas ran
away. They built their place . When the Datu surrendered himself and agreed with
all the Spaniards not all natives were happy.
Due to this, the first known revolt against Spain was recorded. The chief from Leyte
sailed to Cebu and beheaded one of Legazpi’s personal aide.

GALLEON TRADE
The galleon trade was the main
source of the colony during its early
years. The Spanish ships sails
annually across the Pacific between
Manila, Philippines and Acapulco,
Mexico. The trading made Manila
as one of the greatest ports. It
focuses on the trade between
Europe and China. The trade was
very prosperous that it attracted
Chinese Merchants.

• However, the development of the local industry, agriculture, of the Philippines was
neglected. The galleon trade also put too much pressure on the locals because of its
annual polo y servicio.

Legazpi and his men travelled to Panay Island and built a
settlement camp.
He sent his grandson to the nearby island, Mindoro, and
fought with the Muslim Moro Pirates.

Marshall Martin de Goiti, a
great Spanish soldier,
together with 120 Spanish
and 600 locals were sent
by Legazpi to sail and
conquer the northern part
of the island.

• Marshall Goiti arrived at the Pasig River part of the Kingdom of Maynila. Lakan
Dula, Rajah Soliman and Rajah Matanda were defeated by the Spaniards.

Natives fought with the explorers
for 10 months which led Marshall
Goiti to seek for help from Legazpi.
Legazpi with 27 ships and 280
Spaniards and 600 locals conquered
the Kingdom of Maynila.
Legazpi formed a peace pact with
the Rajah Sulayman and Rajah
Lakandula.

The Kingdom of Maynila was
officially defeated.

JUNE 24
Legazpi established a permanent
settlement and proclaimed Manila
as the “Island’s Capital” and
permanent seat of the Spanish
colonial government in the
Western Pacific Ocean.

The second governor general after
the death of Legazpi was
proclaimed. Guido de Lavezars
broke the treaty made between
Legazpi and the former native
rulers of Maynila.

NOVEMBER 6
Due to the changes made
by Lavezars, Lakandula
and Sulayman revolt took
place.
• Other island chiefs with Lakandula created another revolt plan to
remove the Spaniards in the North, however, it the plan reached the
Spaniards due to the traitors. Due to the planned revolt, others were
put tp death and some were exiled.
• This was supposed to be the second revolt by natives against Spain.

The Philippine Referendum of 1599 was completed.
Spain has now legitimate sovereignty over the islands
of the La Islas Filipinas.

In the middle of the Spain
and Netherlands, the
Dutch attacks the
archipelago.

The Battles of La Naval de Manila
has finally ended.
It was a series of match between
Dutch and Spain.
Dutch tried to invade Manila 5
times and all of these attempts
were failed.
Different many revolt took place from different
islands of the Philippines. However, all of these
were not united.

DAGOHOY REBELLION
The longest rebellion has
started, the Dagohoy
Rebellion. It took place in
Bohol. His revolt lasted for
85 years.

Mt. Taal eruption has begun.
Its eruption lasted for 6
months which ended on
December 5 of the same year.
The eruption destroyed some
of the towns of Batangas.

OCTOBER 30
The British armies
occupied the Port of
Cavite. The Philippines
was part of the British
Empire for two years.

FEBRUARY 10
The Treaty of Paris ended the
Seven Years War . However, the
news did not reach the
Philipppines. This treaty indicates
the British colonizers to return
Manila to Spain.
