A number of people believe that parents are more capable of teaching children about food than schools.

While many may find this viewpoint rational, I would argue that school plays a role of equivalent
significance when it comes to educating young children in nutrition and cooking.

On the one hand there are several reasons why parents should be responsible for teaching children
about what they eat. First, kids are more inclined to imitate their parents’ behavior patterns. For
instance things such as table manner, or dietary habits children easily pick up through observation,
which helps form their own habits in the future. In addition, it is a lot easier to practice dietary
knowledge at home than at school. Every home has a kitchen, and the family’s cook, be it mum, dad or
granny can tutor their children more easily, compared to teachers at school, who have to split their
attention between handfuls of other pupils.

On the other hand, schools could help educate pupils about food like no parents or homecook could.
While a homecook’s knowledge is acquired mostly through experience, school provide children with
scientifically correct facts. Information such as the nutritions needed for a body, or the nutritional index
of specific ingredients, etc,… are all included within the curriculum. Furthermore, teachers at school are
more capable to impart knowledge to young, impressionable minds. Teachers have to go through
rigorous training, both in academic knowledge and relations handling, which makes them more suitable
to teach young children than parents.

In conclusion, both family and school play an important role in educating children about diet and
nutritions.
