What is Acoustical Plaster?
• ACOUSTICAL PLASTER IS USED IN A WIDE VARIETY OF COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL APPLICATIONS.
• IT IS COMPLETELY MONOLITHIC AND CAN BE FINISHED IN ALMOST ANY COLOR. SOME ARE MANUFACTURED WITH AN
AGGREGATE, WHILE THE BEST SYSTEMS TYPICALLY CONTAIN FIBERS (COTTON) WHICH HAVE SOME INHERENT
ADVANTAGES.
• ACOUSTICAL PLASTER IS TYPICALLY APPLIED IN THICKNESSES RANGING FROM 3MM (1/16") TO 40MM (1.5").
• COTTON BASED ACOUSTICAL PLASTER SYSTEMS ARE EASY TO INSTALL AND REFINISH AT ANYTIME. THEY CAN MATCH ANY
CUSTOM COLOR, AND EVEN BE MADE TO LOOK LIKE STONE, MARBLE, OR CEMENT.
• THE MOST COMMON APPLICATION IS A SILK FINISH, WHICH IS TROWELED AND INSTALLED TO LOOK PERFECTLY SMOOTH.

q THE DRAWBACK IS THE GREATER LEVEL OF SKILL REQUIRED IN
APPLICATION.
q PROPRIETARY TYPES OF ACOUSTIC PLASTER DEVELOPED IN
THE 1920'S INCLUDED MACOUSTIC PLASTER, SABINITE, KALITE,
WYODAK, OLD NEWARK AND SPRAYO-FLAKE PRODUCED BY
COMPANIES SUCH AS US GYPSUM.

q ACOUSTIC PLASTERS ARE AESTHETICALLY FAVORABLE BECAUSE IT ALLOWS
FOR SEAMLESS SMOOTH APPLICATION COMPARED TO PANELS THAT SHOW
VISIBLE JOINTS.
q SOME ACOUSTIC PLASTERS CONTAIN AGGREGATE, BUT BETTER SYSTEMS
INCORPORATE FIBER.
q ACOUSTIC PLASTERS ARE GENERALLY APPLIED AT A THICKNESS BETWEEN
1/16” AND 1.5”.

GREATER THAN THE FIRST AND VICE VERSA.

ACOUSTICS PLASTERBOARD
q ACOUSTIC PLASTERBOARD IS AN ACOUSTIC
ALTERNATIVE TO STANDARD PLASTERBOARD.
q THE DENSITY OF THE BOARDS IS HIGHER
THAN THAT OF STANDARD PLASTERBOARD.
12.5MM ACOUSTIC PLASTERBOARD CAN BE
USED TO REDUCE NOISE TRANSMISSION
THROUGH WALLS AND CEILINGS.
q IT IS ADVISED THAT THIS BOARD SHOULD BE
USED IN COMBINATION WITH OTHER
PRODUCTS TO ACHIEVE THE MAXIMUM
LEVELS OF SOUNDPROOFING
q THIS PLASTERBOARD WILL NOT REDUCE NOISE ON ITS OWN.
q USES: THIS TYPE OF BOARD FOR SOME OF THE WALL AND CEILING PRODUCTS TO IMPROVE
ITS SOUNDPROOFING PERFORMANCE.
q THIS PRODUCT WORKS WELL WHEN COMBINED WITH, DFM ACOUSTIC INSULATION, THAT IS
DENSE FIBRE MATTING, SOUNDBREAKER BARS AND BARRIER SHIELD.

q ACOUSTIC PLASTERS CAN SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THE SOUND
REVERBERATION WITHIN THE SPACE.
q MOST ACOUSTIC PLASTERS HAVE A NOISE REDUCTION COEFFICIENT
BETWEEN 0.5 AND 1.00.
q THE NOISE REDUCTION COEFFICIENT (NRC) DETERMINES THE ABILITY OF A
MATERIAL TO REFLECT OR ABSORB SOUND.
q IT IS A NUMBER BETWEEN 0 AND 1, WHICH 0 BEING PERFECTLY REFLECTIVE
AND 1 BEING PERFECTLY ABSORPTIVE.
q THE APPLICATION OF ACOUSTIC PLASTERS HELPS TO INCREASE THE

APPLICATION
q DESPITE ITS ADVANTAGE, ACOUSTIC PLASTER REQUIRES HIGH LEVELS OF ARTISAN SKILLS IN ORDER TO OBTAIN THE
RATED SOUND ABSORPTION COEFFICIENTS. THE PROPORTIONS AND RECOMMENDED MIXING TIME OF THE PLASTER
MUST BE FOLLOWED STRICTLY IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THE DESIRED RESULT. TO ENSURE SEAMLESS SURFACE, IT IS
RECOMMENDED TO START WITH A CEILING THAT IS PERFECTLY LEVEL. THE ABSORPTIVE SUBSTRATE PANELS ARE
THEN ATTACHED WITH ITS SEAMS FILLED AND SANDED SMOOTH.LAYERS OF PLASTER COATING ARE THEN APPLIED TO
ACHIEVE A SEAMLESS SMOOTH SURFACE.ACOUSTIC PLASTERS MAY BE WORKED TO PRODUCE DIFFERENT SURFACE
TEXTURES BUT MUST BE DONE TIMELY AFTER THE APPLICATION.
q DIFFERENT TYPES OF MOUNTING STYLES FOR ACOUSTIC PLASTERS CAN ALSO AFFECT THE ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE
OF THE SYSTEM. THESE MOUNTING TYPES INCLUDE DIRECT TO SUBSTRATE, SUSPENDED OR DIRECT TO FRAMING, OR
A PLASTER ONLY SYSTEM THAT CAN BE SPRAYED ON DIRECTLY TO THE SUBSTRATE WITHOUT THE PLACEMENT OF ANY
ACOUSTICAL BOARDS. CONTROL JOINTS MAY ALSO BE BUILT INTO THE SYSTEM TO PREVENT CRACKS WITHIN THE
PLASTER.
q ACOUSTIC PLASTER IS USED IN CONSTRUCTION OF ROOMS WHICH REQUIRE GOOD ACOUSTIC QUALITIES SUCH AS
AUDITORIUM AND LIBRARIES. PROPRIETARY TYPES OF ACOUSTIC PLASTER DEVELOPED IN THE 1920S INCLUDED
MACOUSTIC PLASTER, SABINITE, KALITE, WYODAK, OLD NEWARK AND SPRAYO-FLAKE PRODUCED BY COMPANIES
SUCH AS US GYPSUM. THESE SUPERSEDED FELTS AND QUILTS AS A COMMON PREFERENCE OF ARCHITECTS BUT
WERE DIFFICULT TO APPLY AND SO WERE SUPERSEDED IN TURN BY ACOUSTIC TILES.
• Mounting Styles
• Acoustical plaster can be mounted in two
ways. The final application choice should be
selected by the architect based on the
projects specifications and requirements.
DIRECT TO SUBSTRATE (TYPE A)
• With Type A mounting, gypsum board is first
installed to a level 1 finish. All HVAC, electrical,
fire sprinkler and other penetrations are
sealed with traditional drywall tape or a self-
adhesive fire-tape to prevent air movement
between the occupied space and the plenum.
• Alternative substrates are: concrete, existing
plaster, GFRG surfaces, and previously painted
GWB. These substrates would need to be
tested for bond strength, cleaned and sanded
smooth. The acoustical board is attached to
the substrates with the adhesive and if
required, secured spring washers.
SUSPENDED - DIRECT TO FRAMING (TYPE E)
• With Type E mounting, the acoustical board and plaster are installed
directly to the drywall grid. The substrate is constructed without a layer of
GWB.
• The acoustical boards are mechanically attached to drywall grid thereby
eliminating the need and cost for a layer of GWB. here is an increase in
sound absorption performance in the low frequency range with the direct-
to grid installation method which is commonly referred to as the E-400 or
E-200 mount and/or air gap behind.

PLASTER ONLY (3MM THICKNESS)


• As an alternative to the the other systems that require an acoustical board
placed behind the finish system, the acoustical finish can be sprayed on
directly to the substrate for a small increase in acoustical performance.
• Primer is applied to a drywall substrate prepared to a level 4 standard.
The primed surface is then sprayed with the Even Better Acoustical plaster.
Alternative substrates such as concrete, existing plaster and previously
painted GWB would need to be prepped accordingly and ensure they are
sound and free from cracking.

q THE INSTITUTE FOR CONTEMPORARY ARTS IS A NON-COLLECTING CONTEMPORARY ART INSTITUTION DESIGNED BY
STEVEN HOLL ARCHITECTS AND LOCATED ON THE VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY CAMPUS IN RICHMOND.
THE DESIGN BY STEVEN HOLL ARCHITECTS EMPHASIZES THE FLUIDITY OF INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR SPACE AND
FOSTERS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN TECHNOLOGY AND NATURAL RESOURCES. THE DESIGN, HOWEVER, CREATES
REVERBERANT SOUNDS THAT DISTURB THE EXPERIENCE WITHIN THE MUSEUM. ACOUSTIC PLASTER WAS USED AS A
REMEDY TO ADDRESS THE SOUND ENVIRONMENT WITHOUT COMPROMISING DESIGN. THE APPLICATION OF
ACOUSTIC PLASTER SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED THE SOUND REVERBERATION, ESPECIALLY IN THE 33-FOOT TALL
CENTRAL FORUM, WHERE OR ECHOING WOULD OTHERWISE OCCUR DUE TO THE HIGH CEILING.
q AUBURN UNIVERSITY JULE COLLINS SMITH MUSEUM OF FINE ART
q THE JULE COLLINS SMITH MUSEUM OF FINE ART IS LOCATED AT THE AUBURN UNIVERSITY AND FEATURES A
COLLECTION OF 20,000 PIECES OF ART. AS A MUSEUM ORIGINALLY CONSTRUCTED IN 2003, THE ACOUSTICS OF THE
BUILDING, WHICH WERE EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS DUE TO LONG REVERBERATION TIMES THAT MADE
CONVERSATIONS WITHIN THE SPACE EVEN UNINTELLIGIBLE, NEEDED SOME SIGNIFICANT UPGRADES. ACOUSTIC
PLASTER WAS INTRODUCED TO SOLVE THE ACOUSTIC ISSUES. IT SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED THE REVERBERATION TIME
AND ADDED A TRANQUIL QUALITY AND BROUGHT A MORE COMFORTING EXPERIENCE TO THE SPACE.
• Maintenance
• acoustic plaster is easy to clean, for example by using a vacuum
cleaner with a soft brush.
• The soft brush ensures that the walls and ceilings are not damaged.
