Archimede’s Principle

1) A fluid of density 1000 kg/m3 has a displaced volume of 2 500 cm3.

a) Calculate the weight of the displaced fluid.
b) What is the upthrust provided?

2) An object has a density of 5 g/cm3 and a volume of 2.2 cm3.

Calculate : i) its mass
ii) its weight

b) It is placed in a fluid of density 3.4 g/cm3 and displaces 3 cm3.

Calculate : i) the mass of fluid displaced
ii) the weight of fluid displaced .

c) Explain whether the object will float or sink .

3) A block is suspended from a spring balance with a weight of 2.0 N with a cross-
sectional area of 4 cm2 and a length of 10 cm . It is submerged into a container of
water until 5 cm remains above the surface of the water.

Calculate : i) the volume of the block submerged in the water.

ii) the volume of water displaced
iii) the mass of water displaced
iv) the weight of water displaced
v) the upthrust provided by the water
vi) the new reading on the spring balance
vii) the new reading if the entire block was submerged

( Density of water = 1 g/cm3 )
