Determination of Dissolved Carbon Dioxide

in a Given Water Sample.
Introduction:
Carbon dioxide is dissolved in water due to the ambient and
due to other biological processes going in water. Carbon
dioxide is responsible for the acidity too in water.
Apparatus:

 Burette
 Pipettes
 Measuring Cylinders
 Titration Flask
 Beaker
Reagents:

 Na2CO3 (Sodium Carbonate, 0.045 N), phenolphthalein

Procedure:

 Take 50 ml of water sample in titration flask.

 Add 4 drops of phenolphthalein indicator.
 If sample becomes pink then there is no free CO 2. Don’t
titrate it.
 If the sample is colorless, it means that free CO2 is
present.
 Titrate it with Na2CO3 (0.045 N).
 When the very light pink color appears, it means that it is
the end point. Note the ml of titrant used and calculate
free CO2 by the following formula:
mg ( ml of titrant ) ×(0.045)× 22× 1000
CO 2∈ =
lit sample volume ∈ml .
