Local residents can enjoy Green Harbor Beach again after they were
advised not to swim there last week due to tests showing high bacteria
levels.
Five Marshfield beaches are tested every Tuesday to determine the
levels of enterococci, bacteria that can cause things like urinary tract
infections. The Marshfield Board of Health receives results every
Wednesday, and if the levels are over 104, the beach is posted.
This designation does not mean the beach is closed, but beach-goers are
notified that the board of health advises they don’t swim in the area.
Ifa beach needs to be posted, selectmen and Beach Administrator Cindy
Castro are notified. The beach will be tested again on Thursday, with
results coming back that Friday.
Green Harbor was retested, and the results Friday, June 23 showed
levels below 10.
“Rains can stir up the water, or it could've just been a bad sample,” said
Valerie Blinn, of the Marshfield Board of Health department, adding that
it could've also been caused by seaweed, although she didn’t suspect that
was the case this time.
“There's always seaweed in the water,” she said.
