morning by tapping on the window of his room.

Answer- Everyone in the author's family thought of
Mourad as some crazy person.

Answer- The narrator thought of Mourad as a fun-loving
person. He knew Mourad enjoyed being alive more than
anybody else. However, he was more shocked than
surprised when Mourad woke him up at four in the
morning to give him a horse ride.

had got a horse?

Answer- Khosorove was the author's uncle. He was

was an enormous man with a powerful head of black hair
and the largest moustache in the San Joanquin Valey. He

Answer- The author refused to think that his cousin
could steal as they belonged to the tribe which was

he wanted to ride the horse or not he was confirmed that
Mourad had stolen the horse. The author thought that
stealing a horse solely for riding is not stealing. It could
be stealing if they wanted to sell the horse.

3. Who is Arak? How is he mentioned in the story?
Answer- Arak was Khosrove's son. He is mentioned in
the story concerning Khosrove. The narration goes like
the boy Arak had once ran eight blocks to the barber's
shop where Khosrove was getting his moustaches
trimmed to tell him that their house is on fire. The author
mentions him to show the response of Khosrove on the
situation which was his usual one "t is no harm: pay no
attention to it"

Answer- Yes the boys rode the horse. They rode together
and Mourad sang. They were in the old country only.
After a while, Mourad asked the author to get down the
horse as he wanted to ride alone. The author asked

D. Long Answer Questions- 5 marks

1. Was the author able to ride the horse?


Answer- The author willed to ride the horse too. He
asked Mourad to let him ride after he saw how
magnificently the horse was riding. Then he got his
chance to ride it. The author leaped to the back of the
horse and for a moment he knew the most fearful
imaginable. The author realises that the horse did not
move. Mourad asked him to kick into the horse's
muscles. He did as Mourad asked and the horse reared
and snorted. Instead of running across the field to the
irrigation ditch the horse ran down the road to the
vineyard of Dikran Halabian where it began to leap over
vines. The horse leaped over seven vines before the
author fell. Then it continued running.

2. "Tm not worried about you, he shouted." Who is 'he


in this line and who does he shout at and why does he
shout?
Answer- 'He' in this line is Mourad. He shouts at the
author because when the author was riding the horse, he
lost control at it and the horse instead of running across
the field to the irrigation ditch, the horse ran down the

road to the vineyard of Dikran Halabian where the horse
began to leap over vines. The horse leaped over seven
vines before the author fell and it continued running. It
took half an hour for Mourad to find the horse and bring
him back.

3. Who was John Byro? Why does he visit the author's


house? Was he welcomed there? Who does he meet
there? How does the other person interact with him?

Answer- John Byro was a farmer. He was Assyrian and


out of loneliness he had learned to speak Armenian. He
was welcomed in the author's house. The author's
mother brought John coffee and tobacco, he rolled a
cigarette and sipped and smoked. He visits the author's
house to discuss his white horse that had been missing
for one month. John Byro met the author's uncle
Khosrove who reacted angrily and impatiently to
whatever he had to say. Whenever John talked about his
horse, Khosrove would interfere and tell him that it is no
harm, he should not pay attention to it.

4. Where did the boys hide the horse? Who did they run
into while riding the horse? How does the person react to
when he sees the horse?
Answer- The boys hid the horse in the deserted vineyard.
They would ride it every morning separately. Whenever

the author rode the horse, it would leap over the grape
vines and small trees throw the author and would run
away. One morning, Mourad and the author both were on
their way to Fetvajian's deserted vineyard, and they met
John Byro who was on his way to the town.
John Byro suspiciously looked at the horse, doubted it
was his horse, asked the boys the name of the horse and
then examined his teeth. He doubted it was his horse but
then he believed the boys as they belonged to the tribe
known for honesty and walks away thinking that it's the
horse's twin.

5. What do the boys do after they were confronted with


John Byro in the vineyard? Why John Byro visited the
author's house again?
Answer- After the boys ran into John Byro along with
the horse, the boys very next morning took the horse to
John Byro's vineyard and put it in the barn. The dogs
followed them without making a sound. And that very
afternoon, John Byro visited the author's house in his
surrey to show the author's family that he had got his
stolen horse back. John Byro told them that the horse is
stronger than ever. Author's uncle Khosrove replies to
him that his horse has been returned, he must not pay
attention to it.
