RAVEL
Joseph Maurice Ravel was born on March 7,1875 in the Basque town of Ciboure, France. His
father was a successful engineer and her mother was Basque but had grown up in Madrid. At
the age of six he began piano lesson with different teachers and five years later, in 1887, he
began studying harmony, counterpoint and composition. At the age of 14 began to took part in
different public concerts and then later Ravel entered in the Paris conservatory winning the
first prize in the piano competition in 1891.

At that time Ravel showed great interest and influence in the work of masters such as Robert
Schumann, Chopin, Franz Liszt, and Debussy.

His early compositions were already samples of a personality and a mastery such that his style
would only evolve with the time, as for example he composed Ballad of the Queen in love and
Sérénade grotesque in 1894 and Menuet antique and Habanera for two pianos in 1895. In
1897 Ravel entered in the André Gedalge's counterpoint class. That same year, Gabriel Fauré
was also his teacher. At the end of his studies he composed the Overture of Shéhérazade, and
the famous Pavane pour une infante défunte that continues to be his most played piano work
by amateur music lovers.

At the beginning of World War I, Ravel began working as a transport driver until 1916. At that
time, he composed Le Tombeau de Couperin, a piano piece on the corner of the tribute to the
masters of French Baroque.

In 1918, and after Debussy's death, Ravel became one of the predominant figures on the
French music scene. At the end of the 1920s he composed the most famous of his works, the
Bolero, commissioned by the dancer Ida Rubinstein. And that same year Ravel made from
January to April an amazing concert tour around United States and Canada that earned him, in
each city visited, an immense success.

Finally, in 1932 Ravel was diagnosed with Pick's disease and five years later he died in Paris
after a brain operation at the age of 62.
