ASSIGNMENT NO.

Title: Liquid-Liquid Equilibrium Data of Ternary System Using Aspen
Plus
Objective: To generate the liquid-liquid equilibrium data for ter nary mixture and compare
them with experimental data.
Procedure:
EXPERIMENTAL DATA
Search for the experimental liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) data for the ternary system for
which you intend to run the property analysis. Report it in the tabular form and its source.
INPUT
1. Open Aspen Plus GUI
2. Select appropriate input and output units and run type
3. Select components for which the property analysis is to be performed.
4. Select the at least three property methods
5. On the ribbon tabs of Home menu, select Analysis on Run Mode Tab
6. Select Ternary Diagram on the Analysis Tab
7. select Continue to Aspen Plus Ternary Diag on Distillation Synthesis window that
appears
8. On the Ternary Map form:
a. select component1, component2, and component3 from the list
b. select the Property Method from the available list
c. select the Valid Phases from the list as Liquid-Liquid
d. Input the value of Pressure and Temperature in the desired unit
e. Give the Number of tie lines and then click on Run Analysis.
RESULTS
1. After the Analysis run successfully, a window will open automatically showing the phase
envelope (binodal curve) and the tie lines for selected ternary system.
2. To see the results in tabulated form, click Analysis in the data browser and click Phase
Envelope Tab for bimodal curve data and Equilibrium Composition for the tie line data.
The results are in the form of worksheet which can be copied and pated on the Excel
worksheet.
3. For comparison with experimental values, copy the tabulated LLE (bimodal data) in MS
Excel worksheet for all the selected methods. Also copy the experimental data in the
same worksheet.
4. Plot the estimated results along with the experimental values. The property method whose
plot is closest to experimental values will be most suitable property method for that
analysis.
Note: Attach all the input and output Aspen forms as snapshot at the desired location in the
report
