SELECTION from Verdi’s Opera, SICILIAN VESPERS. Compiled and arranged for Military Band by V. F. SAFRANEK. This opera was originally produced at the Académie in Paris on June 13, 1855, and its first performance in Italy took place at Parma, Teatro Regio, during the same year, December 26. A revised version was given at La Scala, Milan in 1856, under the title of Giovanna dé Gusman, and again at Naples, January 1857, under the title of Batélde di Turenna. tae tet The score of this opera, conceded as one of the most brilliant of Verdi's earlier operatic works, contains a large number of in- spired melodies and the overture, in particular, is an excellent Piece of work, destined to be played with lasting favor by American bands. t+ + tt + The present selection includes the Introduction to the First Act, followed by Recitative Music (Allegro assai sostenuto), a Ballet Scene from the Four Seasons (Allegro Vivace) the song O fu Palermo, terra adorata fox baritone (Largo), Prelude to Act IV (Allegro Moderato), Ensemble (Moderato) and the Finale to Act IV (Allegro). The Largo for baritone is very typical: of Verdi, and is justly considered as one of his best arias of that kind.
