WATERMARK

DAVID DUCHEMIN
WATERMARK
DAVID DUCHEMIN

On November 12, 2019, Venice was hit by the highest tides since 1966, the second highest in
recorded history. I was there, photographing and teaching, exploring themes of solitude and
the idea that Venice, despite the almost 12 years for which I’ve been photographing her, still
remains elusive, full of anonymous people. It’s a beautiful city that has yet to fully open herself
to me. That’s what I was exploring when the waters rose, begging me to change my approach.
This is a collection of the images from that time. It’s not so much a cohesive body of work as
it is a sneak peek for you and a chance for me to play with the sketches and see where they’re
leading me as I work toward a new printed collection from the last decade.

This short PDF is a first glimpse at my new work created exclusively for you, the community
that so patiently allows me to teach and inspire you. Your support means the world to me and
is largely responsible for getting me to the astonishing places I photograph. I’m so grateful for
that. Grazie Mille.

The title of this monograph is borrowed very self-consciously from the Russian poet Joseph
Brodsky, whose body lies buried in Venice and whose book, Watermark, is about as poetic a
tribute to this city as any outsider could make. Like Brodsky, Venice has left an indelible mark
on me.
David duChemin is a Canadian pho-
tographer based on Vancouver Island,
but at home on any of this of this plan-
et’s seven astonishing continents. He
divides his attention between creating
images of hope for advocacy and fund-
raising projects for the international
humanitarian & NGO community, and
pursuing personal work in wild places.

A passionate advocate of the photo-

graphic arts, David is the author of
several books, including Within The
Frame, The Soul of the Camera, and
The Heart of the Photograph (to be
released in 2020.)
