Chapter 1: Crafts of Soft Materials Crafts from soft materials are handicraft products using soft basic

materials. Soft basic materials are pliable, soft, soft and easy to shape. This craft is deliberately made
by combining using other coloring materials. This type of work can be distinguished according to its
benefits. Some are used as clothing equipment, completeness of an object, house and ritual
purposes. Based on the principle of usefulness, this craft can be categorized as a product: a. add to
the beauty of appearance b. give the characteristics of an object c. become a requirement for use d.
created as a duplication of the original object. e. is a sign or symbol f. as part of a work of art The
existence of soft materials from nature is dwindling, so they are replaced by artificial soft materials.
This artificial soft material is more practical, economical and has a high selling value. Natural soft
materials are obtained from the natural environment and their processing is mixed with artificial
materials. Examples are clay, leather, wood sap, and tissue pulp. Meanwhile, artificial soft materials
are materials for handicrafts mixed with certain chemicals. So that it becomes soft, soft, easy to
shape. Examples: polymer clay, gypsum, fiberglass, wax, soap, and paraffin. The craft technique used
is adjusted to the characteristics of the material. Can use carving, casting, pasting, folding and rolling
techniques. While the requirements for designing craft objects refer to usability, comfort, flexibility,
safety and beauty. Examples of soft crafts from natural materials include ceramics, leather, flour
dough, and nyatu sap. Many artificial materials can be used for crafts. These materials include wax,
plastic, glass, plaster, cement, fiberglass, soap, paraffin or sponge.
