Initial Charge (Activating-charge) 2-1 Preparations and checks prior to initial charging 1,280 * 0.01 (at 20°C) a) Appearance of storage battery: Carefully check the storage battery case for possible defor- mation or damage to the electrolytic cells and other parts, which may have been sustained in ‘transit or in unpacking. b) Amount of electrolyte (dilute sulfuric acid) required: Confirm that the required amount of electrolyte has been furnished, ) Specific gravity of the electrolyte: Confirm that the electrolyte furnished has a specific gravity of 1.280 + 0.01 (at 20°C) 3. Removing seal Before filling with electrolyte, strip off the red tape adhered to the vent of the filling-cap. This tape is used to prevent the plate from oxidizing during storage. Then remove the filling-cap from the battery. 4. Filling with the Electrolyte Use @ beaker and a funnel to feed the liquid up to the evel shown below for each cell of the battery. a). Filling port 5. Starting the Activating Charge AC Liquid level Let the storage battery stand for one hour or more after filling with electrolyte. Wait for the electrolyte temperature to drop to 40°C and below, and then start the activating-charge. 6. Initial Charging Method and Initial Charging Time 6-1 Connect the chargér to the mains. 6-2 Connect the charger to the battery. 6-3 Turn the timer knob clockwise and adjust it to the maximum time (7 hours for SOHZ and 6 hours for 60HZ). Then the red lamp will immediately light and charging will start. 6-4 When the battery voltage rises to nearly 2.4V per cell, the timer will start functioning. After the lapse of the time set by the timer, the charging circuit will be automatically cut and the green lamp will light. 6-5 Subsequently, repeat the procedures given in preceding paragraphs 6.3 and 6.4 and continue the activating charge for the time corresponding to the period of storage after manufacture of the battery shown in the fotlowing Table 1 6-6 After the lapse of the specified charging time, turn the timer knob counterclockwise to OFF position. Then pull out the charging plug and the power cable plug. Table 1, Storage Period after Manufacture ‘Acting Charge Time 0- 3 months approx. 25 hours 3 6 months approx. 35 hours 6 9 months approx. 45 hours 9-12 months approx. 50 hours Note: The time required for the activating charge will differ. The specific gravity of the electrolyte may fail to rise to the specified value of 1.280 (at 20°C) even when charged for the specified time. This often takes place in those batteries which have been stored ‘over 6 months or whose sealing was imperfect or those left stored with their seals removed). In such cases, extend the charging time till both voltage and specific gravity tise to a constant value. 7. Adjusting Specific Gravity In the final stage of charging, the electrolyte should have a specific gravity close to 1.280 (at 20°C). Due to some discrepancies in storage conditions, however, the specific gravity may vary a little from cell to cell Once the rise in specific gravity has completely stopped in the final stage of charging, the specitic gravity must be within the range of 1.270 to 1.290 (at 20°C). Otherwise, it will become necessary to adjust the specific gravity of the electrolyte, If it is too low, add dilute sulfuric acid with a specific gravity of 1.400/20°C. When the specific gravity is found to be too high, add distilled water. Given in Table 2 below are the amounts of dilute sulfuric acid and distilled water to be fed per cell. These adjustments should be carried out while the battery is being charged, and after charging for approximately one hour, confirm that the specific gravity of the electrolyte has beén adjusted to the specified value of 1.280 (at 20°). | l 1 £ Table 2 In case of Low Specific Gravity In case of High Specific Gravity Extract the below-mentioned amount | Extract the below-mentioned amount of electrolyte per 0.01 in difference of | of electrolyte per 0.01 in difference of Type of Battery | specific gravity and add an equivalent | specific gravity and add an equivalent amount of dilute sulfuric acid with amount of distilled water. specific gravity of 1.400/20°C. After completion of the activating charge, wipe off the electrolyte spilled on the upper surface of the battery. After cleaning, adhered to the cap. (Never use the battery with the vent remaining sealed. If so, the battery may explode.) : stall the filler-cap, At this time, confirm that the red tape is not 9. Precautions in Charging 9-1 When the electrolyte temperature drops to 40°C after filling, start to charge the battery. Do not leave it standing for a long time after filling with electrolyte. 9-2 Where the electrolyte temperature rises to 45°C while the battery is being charged, stop charging for awhile and let the temperature drop to 40°C. To stop charging, turn the timer knob counterclockwise to OFF position. When re-starting the changing after a drop of electrolyte temperature, turn the timer knob clock 9-3 Explosive hydrogen gas is produced by the storage battery. Never allow sparks or flames from cigarette lighters to come close to the battery. 9-4 Handle the electrolyte with utmost care. If any electrolyte comes in touch with the skin or clothes, wash away thoroughly with water. Should the electrolyte get in your eye, wash immediately with clean fresh water and promptly consult a doctor,
