Lesson Idea Name: States of Matter

Content Area: Science

Grade Level(s): Second Grade

Content Standard Addressed: S2P1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the properties
of matter and changes that occur in objects.

Technology Standard Addressed: Empowered Learner

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers X Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms

☐ Other:

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) X Phone X Tablet (such as iPad)
X Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)

Type of session:

X Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced

Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):

X Remembering X Understanding X Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

X Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

Before the SRT activity, students will watch a BrainPOP tutorial on the states of matter. After the students
watch the tutorial, the students will create a mind map about the states of matter on Bubbl.us. After the
students have finished creating their states of matter mind maps, they will participate in the Kahoot! SRT
activity.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

X Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) X To illuminate common
misconceptions X Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge X Test preparation

☐ Survey/Poll X Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

This activity should last no longer than 10 minutes, as the results and misconceptions of each question should
be discussed after the question has been answered and the results have been sure to ensure the students can
understand and apply the concepts. The teacher will read each question for the students, and the students
will have 30 seconds to respond using their mobile device, be it a phone, tablet, or other wireless device.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

X Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select X True/False ☐ Yes/No

☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

1. When a solid changes to a liquid, it is called…?

2. T/F Heat increases when a liquid turns into a solid.

3. The best example of a solid is a(n)...?

4. When heat is decreased, a liquid will turn into a…?

5. Which state of matter has no definite volume or shape?

6. T/F When a liquid becomes a gas, the heat is decreased.

7. The best example of a gas is…?

8. The best example of a gas is…?

9. T/F Condensation best describes a gas to a liquid.

10. Liquids have ___ shape and ___ volume.

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

X Yes ☐ No

☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?

X Yes

☐ No

Why or why not?

This SRT activity will provide immediate feedback regarding the questions so the teacher can address any
misconceptions. Both the teacher and the student will be able to formatively assess where they are and see
where they need to be.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the SRT activity, the teacher will look even further into the results of the questions and develop an
activity, such as a think-pair-share, for students to explain and address any misconceptions that came about
during the Kahoot!.

How will the data be used? The results of the Kahoot! will collect and display data regarding whether or not
the students have a good understanding of the states of matter. The results of the activity will not be graded,
however they will be used formatively to inform the learning by both the students and the teacher. The
results of the activity will be shared in real time during the activity as well as after the activity has ended. The
data will also be used to provide additional supports such as a graphic organizer should there be a need found
based on the results.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. From this activity, I was hoping to learn how Kahoot!
works and how to create my own Kahoot! I hope to learn from this activity how the results of a Kahoot! can
be used formatively to inform instruction, as well as how I can help my students use the Kahoot! results as a
self-grading and monitoring tool. I am hopeful that this activity will help students discern what they have
mastered regarding the states of matter and what they may need to go back and review for a better
understanding.

Reflective Practice: I believe this activity will support student learning by allowing the teacher to alter her

teachings should the results deem necessary, as well as help students learn the importance of self-
monitoring. While this assignment is not an introductory activity, the students can use the results from the
Kahoot! and make flashcards on Quizlet to help them master the content they may need additional help on.
