Shortcuts tay be taken, but these often couse additional damage t0 “rancor, etcut components, or printed circuit boards SOLDERING: A weiltioned, hot, clan soldering iron tip ‘wil make soldering easier, without causing damage to the Printed circuit board or the components mounted on it Regular use of a. sponge cleaner will maintain 9 clean foldering surfect, The heat avaiable atthe tp, (not the watt ‘00 ofthe iron) is important. Some SO watt ons reach tem peratures of 1.0000 F, while others will ary malt solder. Smelidiameter tips should be used for single solder con- ‘nections, pyramid end chiel tips for large areas Always diconnect the AC power cord from the line when {oldering. Turing the power ditch OFF is not sufficient Powerline leakage paths, through the heating elements of the non, may destroy transistors, PARTS REMOVAL: If a parti not being returned for in ranty factory replacement, it may be cut in half (with tiagonal cutting pliers) to make romoval easier. Multiple terminal parts, suchas IF transformers, or sectolytic capac tors, should be removed using special de-soldéring tips made ‘epecaly for this purpose, Removing older from terminals, ‘ecluces the possibility of bresking the printed cieuit board ‘hen the partis removed ACCIDENTAL SHORTS: A clean working area, particles, screws, etc, isan important preventive in avoiding {ering problems: Screws, removed from the chassis dk ‘ervicing, shouldbe stored in 8 box until needed. ie operating, It takes only an instant for a base Short to destroy a ranistor (and others cvect-coupled tit). Inthe time it takes for 2 cropped screw, washer, or screw. river 0 contact a pale of terminals (or termina 8 traiistor can be ruined, chasis), SOLIDSTATE DEVICES: Integrated Circuits contain the feauivalent of many circuit parts, including transistors, diodes, {esistors, and capacitors, The preferred troubleshooting pro ‘dure requires isolating the trouble to one sage using AC ‘Spnal tracing methods, Once the suspected stage fs located ‘the DC voltages atthe int and output leads are measured to fe an accurate indication of the operating conditions of the to chock continuity withthe Bo not replace a defective 1C until al Capacitors, and transformers are chocked fst 1 prevent the Feplacement 1C from failing immediately due to defect in the connecting components. Solder and unsolder each lead Separately using a pliers oF other heatsink on the lead to prevent damage from excessive hes. Check that the leads are onnected 10 the correct locations on the printed cireuit board before turning the set on, Whenever posible, 8 transistor tester should be used 10 de- termine the condition of a transistor or diode. Ohmmeter uecks do-not provide conclusive dota, and many ven de troy the junction(s! within the device. istor power amplifier module the power supply filtercapacitors are fully discharge. If an output or driver transistor becomes defective (opens or shorts), always check ALL drectcoupled transistors and ‘diodes in that channel. in adaltion, check the bias pot. and ‘ther parts in the bies network, before installing replacement trendators, All output sn driver transistors in one channel may be destroyed if the bias network Is defective. After parts Feplacernent, check bias for specified idling current. In some applications, replacement of transistors must be ‘made fram the same beta group es the original type. The beta group is indicated by a colored marking onthe transistor Include thi information when ordering replacements ‘When mounting 2 replacement power transistor, be sure the bottom of the flange, mica insulator, and the surface of the hoat sink, are fre of foreign matter. Dust and grt wil pre Vent fla contact, reducing hest transfer 10 the heat Metalic particles can puneture the insulator, cause tnd destroy the transistor. Silicone grease must be used between the transistor and the mica insulator ané between the mica and the heat sink for best heat transfer. Use Dow-Coming DC, or an equivalent ‘compound made for power tonsistor heat conduction. Use care when making connections to speakers and output ‘minal ty of thort, logs should be Used on the exposed ends, or stranded wire shouldbe tinned to prevent frayed wire ends, Current inthe speakers and out put circultry is quite high — poor contac an cause sgniicant power losses. For wi than 30 feet, 16 AWG, oF heevier, should be used VOLTAGE MEASUREMENTS: All voltages are measured with the line voltage adjusted to 120 volts. All messured Voltage are 2 20%, OC voltages are measured to chasse faith 2 VIVA, ith no signal input unless otherwise noted. [AG signal voltages are measured under the conditions spec fied on the schematic ALIGNMENT PROCEDURES: 00 NOT attempt reaignment “less the required test equipment is available, and the alin ‘ment procedure f thoroughly understood.
