This Standard is incorporated by reference in section 121 of the Life Saving
PART 1

Equipment Regulations.
PART 1

APPLICATION

Part I of this publication applies to all lifejackets and Part II applies to inflatable lifejackets.

PART 1 — LIFEJACKETS

1.1 MARKING

1.1.1 General

All lifejackets shall be clearly and indelibly marked in English and French with the
following:
§ Size designation
§ Department of Transport Approval Number
§ Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC) Mark
§ Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Approval
As shown in figures 1.1 E, 1.1F, 1.2 E and 1.2 F

In addition, lifejackets shall be clearly and indelibly marked in English and French with the
following:

n donning diagram

n manufacturer’s name

n lot number and date of manufacture (month and year).


The size designation marking shall be at least 25 mm on an adult size lifejacket and 20
mm on a child size lifejacket, while other markings shall be not less than 5 mm in height.
English markings may be placed on one side of the lifejacket and French markings on the
other.

1.1.2 Pictogram

Child lifejackets shall display in addition to the other required markings the pictogram of
Figure 1.3

1.1.3 Coding

The markings lot number and date of manufacture and Department of Transport Approval
Number may be coded in which case the coding shall be in the following format:

T.C.111-111-111 02 001

1.1.4 Sewn Labels

If required markings are not printed directly on the outer shell of a lifejacket, but are placed
on a label, the labels shall comply with the following:
§ The labels shall be spunbonded, high-density polyethylene sheeting, or the
equivalent.
§ The label shall be fastened to the outer shell of the lifejacket at 7 – 12 stitches
per 25mm.
§ The stitching shall lie 8±4.0 mm from the outer edges of the label along the
entire perimeter.
§ The label shall not have stitching within its printed borders
1.1.5 Donning Diagram

The donning diagram shall measure 55 x 115 mm and shall show at least a side view of a
person wearing the life jacket and the securing arrangement of the tie-tapes or webbing
where applicable.

1.1.6 Indelibility of Marking

Markings shall be considered indelible if they remain legible after the following test:

Submerge a well-cured sample in fresh water for not less than 72 hours. Remove the
sample from water and place it, with its face up, on a hard surface. Rub vigorously with the
fingers for not less than 30 seconds.

1.1.7 Donning Directions

The following information shall be attached to each lifejacket:


§ A clear and concise instruction card for the donning of the life jacket;
§ An instruction card for the light if the lifejacket is equipped with a Personal
Locator Light
If text is used in the instructions, it shall be printed in English and French. The instructions
may be diagrams alone.

1.1.8 Use, Care and Maintenance Manual

Each life jacket is to be supplied with an information manual including manufacturer’s use,
care and maintenance instructions for each type of life jacket.

PART 2 — INFLATABLE LIFEJACKETS

2.1 — APPLICATION
This part applies to inflatable lifejackets

2.2 MARKINGS

2.2.1 General

Inflatable lifejackets must be marked in accordance with Parts 1 and 2 of this TP

2.2.2 Initial Arming Warning

An inflatable lifejacket that is not in an armed and ready-to-use condition shall be


marked with a removable hangtag, which states:

The characters in the warning label shall be at least 1 cm in height.

2.2.3 Label Markings

Inflatable lifejackets shall be labeled in accordance with Figure 3. The characters of


the label shown in Figure 3 shall be at least 20 mm in height. The label shown in
Figure 3 shall be visible before donning, but need not be visible after the lifejacket is
donned.

PART 2

2.2.4 Inflation System Container Area Identification

Identification shall be in accordance with section 10.8 of Underwriters Laboratories


Inc. (UL) Standard 1180, entitled “Fully Inflatable Recreational Personal Flotation
Devices”, as amended from time to time.

2.2.5 Inflation System Container Identification

Identification shall be in accordance with section 10.9 of Underwriters Laboratories


Inc. (UL) Standard 1180, entitled “Fully Inflatable Recreational Personal Flotation
Devices”, as amended from time to time.

2.2.6 Visibility of Manual Actuation

Identification shall be in accordance with section 10.10 of Underwriters Laboratories


Inc. (UL) Standard 1180, entitled “Fully Inflatable Recreational Personal Flotation
Devices”, as amended from time to time.

2.3 Manufacturer Instruction Manual

The manufacturer instruction manual shall contain instruction regarding donning,


arming and re-packing of the lifejacket.

2.3.1 Use, Care, and Maintenance Instructions

The instruction for use, care and maintenance shall be in accordance with section
11.2.2 of Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) Standard 1180, entitled “Fully Inflatable
Recreational Personal Flotation Devices”, as amended from time to time.
