An argument is a collection of

some of which are intended
to provide support or
evidence in favor of one of
the others.

Logical
Fallacies
Exercise is good,

therefore

everybody should

exercise.
Dicto Simpliciter
unqualified

generalization due

to lack of

consideration of

other propositions
You can’t speak

French. I can’t speak

French. I must

therefore conclude that

nobody at the

University can speak

French.

Contradictory
Premises
negating premises

that no argument is

Students should be allowed to look

at their textbooks during

examinations. After all, surgeons

have X-rays to guide them during

the operation; lawyers have briefs

to guide them during a trial. Why

then shouldn’t students be allowed

to look at their textbooks during

exams?
False Analogy
using examples

that seem related

but have different

degrees of

variations
Let’s not take Bill on our picnic.

Every time we take him out with

us, it rains.
Post Hoc
false cause;

A man applies for a job. When the

boss asks him what his qualifications

are, he replies that he has a wife

and six children at home, the wife

is a helpless cripple, the children

have nothing to eat, no clothes to

wear, no shoes on their feet, there

are no beds in the house, no coal

in the cellar, and winter is coming.

Ad Misericordiam
appeal to

If Madame Curie had not happened

to leave a photographic plate in a

the world today would not know

Hypothesis
Contrary to Fact
Offering a poorly

supported claim about

what might have

happened in the past or

future, if (the hypothetical

part) circumstances or

conditions were different

How will
debating help
me?
How has debating helped me?
- humbles me
- opens my mind to other people's ideas
- strengthens my stand or corrects my view
- makes me more fluent
- trains me to think quickly
- instills social awareness in me
- helps me build decision-making skills
- makes me more employable (and desirable :p)
Remember!
Argue with the person's idea, not with the person.
Engaging is not trash-talking.
There will ALWAYS be better ways of saying things.
Not everything should be debated.
