The Emperor’s New Clothes

written by Hans Christian Andersen

The story is entitled The Emperor’s New Clothes written by Hans Christian Andersen. The story
tells about an Emperor’s weakness and obsession for clothes. All he thinks about are his
wardrobes and how he would look on with his clothes. He does not care about governing his
kingdom.

One day the weavers came to his kingdom to offer him new exceptional sets of clothes from
which they say that the clothes are unique and whoever can’t see and appreciate the clothes are
unfit to his position.

The weavers worked day and night to pretentiously makes the invisible clothes. They robbed the
Emperor’s delicate silk and the purest gold thread. They do this repeatedly in many days to show
that they are working to create the Emperor’s invisible clothes. The Emperor sends one of is
officers to check on their work. The official pretended to see the clothes so that the emperor will
not see them as a fool. When the Emperor came to personally check on their work, he saw
nothing but he also pretended to see the clothes so that he will not be embarrassed to his people.

The Emperor walked the streets naked pretending on wearing the most elegant wardrobe of all
and the people of his kingdom pretended to see the clothes to please the emperor. Then from the
crowd a child exclaimed that the Emperor is wearing nothing.

The Emperor’s obsession to wardrobe led him and his people to deceive one another. It shows
how they pretended and lied just to please one person. In our present day, this is also happening.
Many people use their power and authority to manipulate others. Many are led to pretend and lie
to manipulate and to please others to be able to stay in power or authority. Like the child, we
should live in truthfulness even if it will be hurtful. In truth we can live harmoniously and
peacefully.
