HEAT INTEGRATION

Requirement 2

Student: Jairo Luis Duran Gomez.

An industrial plant has a feed mixture (C1) that is first heated from 290 K to 520 K and
then fed to a reactor. The gases leaving the reactor (H1) at 490 K are cooled to 300 K
before being sent to the recovery unit. The mixture leaving the bottom of the reactor is
separated into a vapor fraction (H2) that exits the separation unit at 400 K and is cooled to
300 K prior to storage. And the liquid fraction exits the reactor (C2) is purified and
recycled by lowering to a temperature of 320 K, this recycle is heated to 410 K. There are
two utility services, one for heating (HU) and one for cooling (CU). A value of ∆Tmin = 10
K is used.

Table 1. Stream data.

STREAM DATA

Flow Rate x
Specific Heat Enthalpy
Streams (kW/K) Ts (K) Tt (K) Change (kW)
H1 15 490 300 -2850
H2 10 300 400 1000
C1 17 290 520 3910
C2 9 320 410 810

First we organize the system temperatures from highest to lowest to construct the
temperature interval diagram (TID).

Figure 1. TID. (Temperature interval diagram).

Then we proceed to do the Table of Exchangeable Heat Loads (TEHL):

Table 2. TEHL for process hot streams.

TEHL
Z H1 (kW) H2 (kW) ∑ Hi (kW)
1 0 0 0
2 1050 0 1050
3 300 0 300
4 1050 700 1750
5 450 300 750
∑ 2850 1000 3850

Table 3. TEHL for process cold streams.

TEHL
Z C1 (kW) C2 (kW) ∑Ci (kW)
1 680 0 680
2 1190 0 1190
3 340 180 520
4 1190 630 1820
5 510 0 510
∑ 3910 810 4720

From the TEHL tables:

 Heating costs without energy integration: 3850 kW.

 Cooling costs without energy integration: 4720 kW.
Then we construct the cascade diagram:

Figure 2. Cascade diagram.

Figure 3. Revised cascade diagram.

In a matter of cost analysis and identification of energy needs, we do a synthesis of heat-

exchange networks:
