1. What are the key causes of the civil war identified by:
a) Antony Beevor in Source A

According to Beevor source A, the three possible key causes were: firstly, the
threat of the socialist leader Largo Caballero against the right if they get won.
Secondly, the nationalist pretended to risen in revolt to avoid a communist putsch.
Finally, the justification that if the nationalist did not first, their opponents would
submit them.

b) Patricia Knight in Source B


According to Knight source B, the three possible key causes were: firstly,
difficulties of modernizing a backward economy and social structure. Secondly,
there was some weak democratic traditions. Finally, Spain was faced against
background of the Depression.

c) Frances Lannon in Source C

According to Lannon source C, the three possible key causes were: firstly, fight
over natural resources. Secondly, arms were taken against the Republican
government. Finally, the commitment of the Republican government to the social
reform, devolution and secularization.
