INTRODUCTION

A survey on thirty (30) students was conducted to determine their scores in

Mathematics, English, Science and their High School Average. The 30 respondents
belong to 3 sections, Low, Better, and Best. This paper aims to analyze if there is an
association between the Gender and their scores in the 3 subjects as well as their High
School Average. Moreover, the study also aims to determine if there is an association
between the Sections and the 3 subjects as well in their High School Average.

II. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The mean scores of the 3 subjects were computed. The mean score in
Mathematics is 30.50, 28.60 in English and the mean score in Science is 20.5. The
mean score of the high school average was also computed which is 79.4.

Table 1. Mean Scores of the Respondents.

Subject Mean
Mathematics Score 30.5000
English Score 28.6000
Science Score 20.5333
High School Average 79.4333

The scores of the students were classified into “High” and “Low”. If the score is
above the mean score, it is classified as “High” while if the score is below the mean
score of each subject area, it is classified as “Low”. To determine the association
between the gender and the scores, the following cross-tabulations were used.

Table 2 shows that among the 14 male respondents, seven (7) got an average
score above the mean and seven (7) got scores lower than the mean. Among the 16
female respondents, eleven (11) scored high and only five (5) got low scores. This
shows that eighteen (18) students achieved high scores while twelve (12) got low
scores in Mathematics. The chi-square test was computed to find out if there is an
association between gender and mean score in mathematics. The computed chi-square
is 1.094 and the probability is 0.296. This shows that there is no significant association
between the gender and the score in Mathematics.

Gender High Low Total
Male 7 7 14
Female 11 5 16

Table 3 shows that among the 14 male respondents, six (6) got an average score
above the mean and seven (8) got scores lower than the mean. Among the 16 female
respondents, nine (9) scored high and only seven (7) got low scores. This shows that
fifteen (15) students achieved high scores while fifteen (15) got low scores in English.
The chi-square test was computed to find out if there is an association between gender
and mean score in English. The computed chi-square is 0.536 and the probability is
0.464. This shows that there is no significant association between the gender and the
score in English.

Table 4 shows that among the 14 male respondents, seven (7) got an average
score above the mean and seven (7) got scores lower than the mean. Among the 16
female respondents, eight (8) scored high and only eight (8) got low scores. This shows
that fifteen (15) students achieved high scores while fifteen (15) got low scores in
Science. The chi-square test was computed to find out if there is an association
between gender and mean score in Science. The computed chi-square is 0.000 and the
probability is 1.000. This shows that there is no significant association between the
gender and the score in Science.

Table 5 shows that among the 10 respondents from best section, seven (7) got an
average score above the mean and three (3) got scores lower than the mean. Among
the 11 respondents from better section, seven (7) scored high and only four (4) got low
scores. Among the 9 respondents from low section, four (4) scored high and only five
(5) got low scores. This shows that eighteen (18) students achieved high scores while
twelve (12) got low scores in Mathematics. The chi-square test was computed to find
out if there is an association between section and mean score in Mathematics. The
computed chi-square is 1.385 and the probability is 0.500. This shows that there is no
significant association between the section and the score in Mathematics.

Table 6 shows that among the 10 respondents from best section, seven (7) got an
average score above the mean and three (3) got scores lower than the mean. Among
the 11 respondents from better section, six (6) scored high and only five (5) got low
scores. Among the 9 respondents from low section, two (2) scored high and only seven
(7) got low scores. This shows that fifteen (15) students achieved high scores while
fifteen (15) got low scores in English. The chi-square test was computed to find out if
there is an association between section and mean score in English. The computed chi-

square is 4.469 and the probability is 0.107 This shows that there is no significant
association between the section and the score in English.

average score above the mean and two (2) got scores lower than the mean. Among the
11 respondents from better section, five (5) scored high and six (6) got low scores.
Among the 9 respondents from low section, two (2) only scored high and seven (7) got
low scores. This shows that fifteen (15) students achieved high scores and) also low
scores in Science. The chi-square test was computed to find out if there is an
association between section and mean score in science. The computed chi-square is
6.469 and the probability is 0.039. This shows that there is a significant association
between the section and the score in Science.

low scores. This shows that fifteen (15) students achieved high scores while fifteen (15)
got low scores in High school Average. The chi-square test was computed to find out if
there is an association between section and mean score in High School Average. The
computed chi-square is 9.135 and the probability is 0.010. This shows that there is a
significant association between the section and the score in HS Average.
