Community Unity in West Covina

On Saturday April 16th, starting at 7:00 a.m., the City of West Covina invites all residents to
participate in the 2011 Community Unity event at City Hall. Mayor Steve Herfert stated,
“Community Unity is an opportunity for the entire City to engage in reducing waste, re-purposing
materials, and enjoying an afternoon of family activities.” This event provides numerous
opportunities for residents—all in one day.

7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Donate and Re-Use

Clean out your kid’s rooms and make more space in that garage! The City will accept “gently used”
donations of the following items: children’s toys, children’s games, and adult & youth sports
equipment.

In addition to donating, everyone is ALSO welcome to re-purpose any of the donated items for their
own use—free of charge! Not only will families benefit from the free exchange of goods, but the
City benefits as well. By re-purposing items, it helps diminish waste collection and reduces impacts
to landfills.

The City Manager, Andrew Pasmant, was proud to announce that West Covina is partnering with the
International Alliance for Youth Sports (IAYS). This partnership will ensure that any donated sports
equipment not re-purposed into the West Covina community will be shipped to Kampala, Uganda as
part of the Global Gear Drive by IAYS. This partnership will give unmatched opportunities for the
community to positively impact the health and well being of deserving children in Uganda. Mayor
Pro-Tem Mike Touhey was pleased to share that Mr. Robert Kendall Goff, the Honorary Consul of
Uganda, will be present to receive the gifts of good will on behalf of his country.

Councilwoman Shelley Sanderson reminded everyone “The only key to participating in the Donate
and Re-use program is that everyone must Give to Receive. Please bring at least one donated item in
order to engage in free re-purposing.” Donations will be accepted and distributed in the lower
parking lot of the West Covina Civic Center. To provide a “rolling drop off” enter the lower parking
lot from West Garvey Avenue. For more information, please call (626) 939-8430.

9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. E-Waste Round Up

Properly dispose of your electronic waste in a safe and easy way. In partnership with Community
Unity, the E-Waste Roundup will be held at the City’s Maintenance Yard located at 825 S. Sunset
Avenue in West Covina. For more information on this portion of the event, please call (626) 939-
8458.

10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Egg-Citing Easter Egg Hunt

Thanks to a donation from the Castucci Foundation, the City will provide an Easter Egg hunt on the
Civic Center lawn. Join your neighbors for a festive hunt that will delight youth of all ages. Egg
hunts will be held as follows:
10:30 a.m. 2-3 year olds 11:00 a.m. 4-5 year olds
11:30 a.m. 6-7 year olds 12:00 p.m. 8 years +

12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Community Unity After Party

Once the donation site closes and the Easter Egg hunt has concluded, residents are welcome to join
the After Party located in the Civic Center Courtyard. Families can enjoy activities for the kids and
a delicious BBQ meal ($2/person). Community Services Director, Michele McNeill stated “This
event represents all that the City of West Covina’s Community Services Department hopes to
achieve—an open and engaging opportunity for residents to assist their fellow neighbor; an
afternoon of family activities including an Easter egg hunt; and a scrumptious barbecue with bounce
houses for afternoon play. What else could families want on a sunny Saturday?”

Don’t miss this exciting event for West Covina residents! Mark your calendars today and bring the
family out for a fun-filled event on Saturday, April 16 from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
