Starting with activity Relationships lets start to understand Activity Types

There are two Activity Types

 Predecessor
 Successor

Excavation

Back fill
To understand Activity types I will assume two simple activities and then same concept will be applicable
on any activities.

As per above Diagram There is Excavation and back fill activities whereas excavation will be done first
and after that ,Excavated area will be backfilled with sand.

So Excavation is primary activity and backfill can only be done when excavation will be finished so
backfill is depending on excavation activity whereas excavation is independent activity.

 Activity which is driving other activities start dates are called Predecessor Activities. These
activities are independent.
 Activity for which start date is depending on other activity is called successor activity and such
activities are dependent activities.

Tip: There will always be arrow between two activities to show relationship (There are four
relationship types)
Arrow tail connecting activity is predecessor whereas arrow head connecting activity is
successor activities.
