JUDGING A

WORK OF
ART
• To judge a work of art is likened to solving
problem. Not all works are significant and
acceptable.

• In the process of creation, there are 3

phases
• Idea of problem – which artist continuously explores
on to illumine the lives of humanity.
• Material – which he uses to display or express his
feelings.
• Form and organization – the artistic response from
the viewer.
BASIC ASSUMPTIONS
OF THE ART
• ART has been created by people at all
times, in all countries and it lives because it
is well-liked and enjoyed.
• The great Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey may have
been compiled in the 9th and 12th centuries BC.
• The sculptured head of Queen Nefertiti of Egypt.
• ART involves experience and that there
can never be appreciation of art without
experience, the actual doing of something.
• Experience is the first and last demand of art.

Olga Somaroff Stotovski, 20th century pianist and

music educator described :
Someone else can compose music for you,
Someone else can perform music for you,
No one on earth can listen to music for you.
ART APPRECIATION:
CREATIVITY, IMAGINATION
AND EXPRESSION
Art Appreciation as a Way of Life
• According to Jean Paul Sartre,
the role of art as a creative work
depicts the world in a completely
different light and perspective
and the source is due to human
freedom.
The Role of Creativity in Art Making
• Creativity requires thinking outside the box

– Creativity is the act of turning new and imaginative ideas into reality. Creativity is
characterized by the ability to perceive the world in new ways, to find hidden
patterns, to make connections between seemingly unrelated phenomena, and to
generate solutions. Creativity involves two processes: thinking, then
producing.(www.creativityatwork.com)
CREATIVITY
– Mental characteristic that
allows a person to think
outside of the box, which

Art as a Product of Imagination
“ Imagination is more important
than knowledge. For knowledge is
limited to all we now know and
understand, while imagination
embraces the entire world, and all
there ever will be to know and
understand” – Albert Einstein
