RATIO AND PROPORTION

A randomized clinical trial was conducted to test the effectiveness of low-dose

aspirin in preventing heart attacks. Subjects were randomly assigned to receive
either low-dose aspirin or an inactive placebo.

There were 11,027 subjects in the aspirin group, 4,410 are males and 6,617 are
females. After 5 years of observation, there had been a total of 10 fatal heart
attacks in this group. What was the proportion having a fatal heart attack in the
aspirin group?

CALCULATE:

1. Ratio of males to females

2. Ratio of females to males.
3. Proportion of having heart attack in the aspirin group.
4. Proportion of those who lived.

MALES- 4410
FEMALES- 6617

1. RATIO OF MALES TO FEMALES

4410 x 100 = 0.67 x 1 =0.67 0.67:1 0.67 male : 1 female

6617

2. RATIO OF FEMALES TO MALES

6617 x 100 = 1.5 x 1 =1.5 1.5:1 1.5 female : 1 male

Proportion = # of people with characteristics X 102

3. PROPORTION OF HAVING HEART ATTACK

10 X 102 = 0.09%

4. PROPORTION OF THOSE WHO LIVED

11,017 X 102 = 99.91%
